Note: This article is from a person named "MICK", who tells us about his experience with self-awareness.
Because most people who pursue success look for external factors to achieve it, those who lack self-awareness are more likely to feel distressed and frustrated by this process. For instance, They might see someone working in real estate who is driving a modern car and decide they want to work in the same field too.
However, there is a significant issue with this type of thinking because many people pursue things in search of their potential outcomes rather than because they enjoy the process, and as a result, very few of them succeed in reaching their goals.
Discovering something you enjoy doing is the best course of action you can take to succeed in life. Success can be attained in a variety of ways; for some people, that means working in e-commerce or the real estate industry, while for you, success might mean, for instance, pursuing your passion for biscuit baking.
This raises the question, "What path will lead you to your goal?”
Finding the process that you will enjoy the most will increase your chances of success, make challenges more meaningful, make life more enjoyable, and boost your self-confidence. So instead of searching for the quickest way to success, do what makes you feel good.
Success and happiness all start inside of you, so if you're ready to delve deeper into your inner world and learn more about yourself, let's continue.
What is Self-Awareness?
Knowing who you are, what you like to do, and having self-control are the three main characteristics of self-awareness, and each of these characteristics is crucial.
Understanding and controlling the conversations you have with yourself while taking into account your thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and actions are the essence of effective self-management. If you're interested in learning more, check out this ultimate self-management guide.
Knowing yourself is the crucial topic we'll start with right away. Being aware of yourself entails being aware of your values, strengths, personality, drive, passion, and purpose. Making decisions that are in your best interests is made simpler for you when you visualize yourself in a better situation. In this way, you can create a life that satisfies your needs and makes you truly satisfied. As the philosopher "Socrates" once said, "Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom."
What would you say if someone asked you if you were self-aware? "Yes" or "No"?
True self-awareness is a rare quality, according to research, but not because a lot of people would say "No" to the prior question. The truth is that self-awareness cannot be acquired magically, as it is a skill that can be learned.
This means that there are various levels of self-awareness, so let's use a simple example to demonstrate this. Consider a guitarist's skill level at the outset. How good are they? Not good at all, is it? It can be difficult to start learning new skills, but with practice, you can get better at any skill and eventually adapt to it.
Although being paid to perform in front of others suggests that you have a respectable level of skill, it does not mean that you have reached your full potential. There are many reasons to continue or even increase your practice.
Self-awareness is subject to the same rules; you can develop self-awareness, and it will get better and provide you with more advantages with practice. But it's also crucial to realize that, much like learning to play the guitar, becoming self-aware won't come to you overnight. So why put in the time and effort to be self-aware?
Why is Self-Awareness Important?
If I could go back in time and give myself one piece of advice, even a modicum of wisdom, I would tell myself to stop trying to live up to other people's expectations and stop comparing my life to the lives of people I don't even know. Instead, knowing who you are, what you love, what you want to be, and who you want to become should be your starting point.
Life is at the center of this process, and if you are not enjoying it, you are wasting your most valuable resource—your time. Additionally, it is unlikely that you will acquire the traits of success if you do not experience joy. Consider perseverance, patience, and resilience as a result when you are going through a challenging time.
By being self-aware, you can design your life to focus on the things that give it the most meaning and purpose, which makes you happier overall. Being self-aware has many benefits, including allowing you to live up to your full potential, which is why it's crucial if you want more success and happiness.
Self-Awareness Benefits
In order to experience more meaning, joy, and happiness, a person must first be self-aware, as this is the basis of a good life. Here's how the benefits of self-awareness can help you do just that:
1. Better Self-Leadership
You gradually gain more clarity in your vision and values through practice. This will help you maintain focus on your path to success and give you a clearer sense of purpose and direction in life.
2. More Confidence
When you align with your inner self about who you really are and concentrate on the goal you want to achieve, you will feel more confident, and others’ opinions will become less significant to you.
3. Make Better Decisions
Knowing your motives, strengths, and values makes decision-making simpler. The more self-aware you are, the easier it will be to block out distractions.
4. More Effective Communication
Understanding and controlling yourself is a crucial aspect of self-awareness. This includes your ideas, sentiments, and feelings, and by making these improvements, you also lay the foundation for effective communication and empathy.
5. A Better Relationship With Yourself and Others
When you combine the aforementioned benefits, you will have what you need to live authentically, which is crucial for creating meaningful relationships with both yourself and other people.
The fact that improvements in one aspect will impact all others makes these benefits even better. Hopefully, you now understand why self-awareness is so important.
Tips for Improving Self-Awareness
Your understanding that self-awareness creates opportunities for happiness and success is always the first great idea, which means that you have already taken the first step toward self-awareness. It took me years to understand this concept, during which time I jumped from one brilliant idea to the next, and after each failed attempt, I began to lose hope for a better future.
Lack of self-awareness is the main cause of my frustration because I tried to get to the result by cutting out as much of the process as I could. When you realize that self-awareness is the best basis for well-being, success, and happiness, everything changes. How do you increase your self-awareness?
The best way is to make it a habit to practice self-awareness techniques to become more self-aware. To achieve this, here are the best tips to keep in mind:
1. Practice Self-Reflection
When you're in the moment, you usually act and think differently, especially when things are heated, as we frequently act and think a little differently.
Reviewing those times with self-reflection enables you to live them again without experiencing the same level of emotion. You start to notice various patterns of behavior as you reflect on various circumstances and times. This happens when you start to notice that certain stimuli consistently elicit the same psychological reactions.
You need to make self-reflection a habit rather than something you do once or twice a year because this is the level of awareness needed to bring about any kind of change.
2. Understand the Future Clearly
While self-reflection is more concerned with the past, generating clarity is more concerned with the future because it involves determining your direction and core values.
The more you practice, the more clearly you understand things and the more clear your vision and values become, and just like self-reflection, you should make this a habit. When attempting to describe what is most important to you, don't worry if you don't feel complete. Living your life with passion and purpose makes it more enjoyable. It takes time and practice to get to this point, but the most crucial thing is to start.
3. Acknowledge Reality
Striking for perfection is one of the main reasons people put off starting something, even though it is ironic that practice makes perfect and it is healthy to not know everything, even about yourself. Additionally, there is nothing wrong with making a change now that will result in a radical personality shift a year from now, as life starts you off with an incomplete task and a direction that is incomplete.
Every time you start something new, it takes time to get better. You have to try different things to see what works best for you, as you can only find out what works for you through experience, and when you take action before you have all the facts, you will make mistakes.
However, you need to be aware that this is how you develop and learn. Recognize that failure is a necessary step on the road to success. Recognize that everything that occurs is an integral part of the process, so find lessons you can learn and then move on.
4. Stay Curious
No matter how far you get, you should always approach things with curiosity and enthusiasm, as if you were just starting out. It's wise advice, particularly if you've been working on increasing your self-awareness for some time. The reason you might surprise yourself is that there is always something new to learn, an interest to keep an eye out for, or a fact to unearth.
With time, your beliefs and values might evolve. Every stage of life brings with it fresh opportunities, doors, and possibilities. But only for those who are curious and open to it, both of which are associated with a higher quality of life. On the other hand, isolating yourself can cause annoyance and hostility.
Best Methods to Improve Self-Awareness
There are many different approaches and strategies for improving self-awareness, and some may be better than others.
Some of the methods we'll go over are great to use on occasion, while others are a little simpler and help create a positive habit of self-awareness. If you combine methods from both directions, you'll experience all the benefits we discussed. The methods I still use today to increase self-awareness are listed below:
1. Personality and Strength Tests
A great way to gain new insights is to take personality and strength tests. This is not because the results frequently surprise you, but rather because of the fresh viewpoint they offer. You can use this test to better understand who you are, but it's important to avoid being emotionally impacted by the results, so don't be concerned if the answers do not align with how you perceive yourself.
Even if you disagree with the results, the test is still a useful starting point for self-exploration. If you'd like a different viewpoint, I recommend taking the personality and strength test; after all, it's just a tool, not a source of truth.
2. Hiking
Taking a long walk in nature is one of the best ways to reconnect with yourself. You receive a different type of energy flow while walking, which helps to clear your mind and elevate your mood. You're more likely to practice self-reflection and develop self-awareness when you're in this state of mind.
Make sure you're alone and without any distractions, such as music or an audiobook, when you do this. Instead, take advantage of this opportunity to explore your inner world. I often find that when I do this, I have many new ideas and insights. For instance, I did this when I had to specify the routing of my website because I felt helpless and confused.
Make your walk last a very long time to reap a double benefit. If you were planning on walking for an hour, try making it 4 hours long. If you're wondering about the reason, I encourage you to give it a try and decide for yourself.
3. Journaling
Although taking a long walk in nature is a great way to gain personal insights, it probably isn't something you do every day. So It's important to build habits of self-awareness, which is exactly what journaling can do for you.
Journaling is a simple practice as there are no restrictions on what you can write in your journal, so you can keep a journal of your goals and aspirations in addition to your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The main advantage is that it only takes 2-3 minutes a day to begin writing it down, so there is no reason not to make it a habit.
Why is journaling beneficial?
First, it's an easy way to stay engaged because journaling doesn't take much time, and second, the biggest impact occurs when you put things in writing because it helps you store information. Briefly put, journaling is a quick and efficient way to increase self-awareness.
4. Meditation
Higher levels of self-awareness are one of the many benefits of meditation, among others. Also, It can turn into the most tranquil time of your day with a little meditation practice.
So how do you start practicing meditation?
Breath-focused meditation is one of the simplest ways to get started. This implies that you use your breath as the object of focus and that your attention follows the breath as you inhale and exhale.
Let go of all the distractions, calmly return your focus to your breathing when you drift away from it (which will happen constantly), and keep doing this until the session is over. Start out with 5 or 10 minutes each day and work your way up to about twenty.
If you lead a busy life and want to take advantage of all the benefits, this seems to be the way to go.
5. Mindfulness
Mindfulness and meditation are similar, but the difference between them is that you can practice mindfulness while engaging in regular activities like eating, walking, or taking a shower.
Therefore, practicing mindfulness involves paying attention to the simple, daily activities you engage in. For instance, when you eat, do you fully concentrate on what you are eating or do you watch videos?
The concept behind mindfulness is to keep your attention on the one thing you're doing. In this case, eating mindfully means paying attention to the taste and texture of each bite.
Practicing meditation requires time, while mindfulness can be practiced anywhere and with anything, though it takes a little practice to get into that state of mind.
6. Reading Books
A great way to broaden your worldview is to read helpful books. One of the best ways to increase awareness and self-awareness is to read for self-education because, for the price of two cups of coffee, books can give you an inside look at how the most successful people think.
Books are portable, allowing you to read them wherever you are most comfortable. You can also reread them to refresh the information and improve your memory.
If you are serious about self-exploration and learning more about the world around you, books are a great way to do that. There are many benefits to reading more books.
7. Asking for Feedback
This method differs from others because it involves other people, and the fact that it places you in a vulnerable position makes the situation more difficult.
However, feedback is one of the best tools for increasing awareness and accelerating growth, as it provides insights from a different perspective, and these perceptions can highlight your blind spots and help you achieve quick success.
Here's some advice for handling feedback: take your time, put your emotions on hold, and respect the feedback. Ask questions when you disagree with feedback rather than get angry.
Can you imagine yourself from their perspective? Is there some truth to it? Can you do anything to better yourself using these notes?
Consider the comments' constructive criticism, take what you can from it, and keep in mind that their goal is not to win you over, as they are meant to highlight your weaknesses, allowing you to take advantage of them.
8. Traveling
Although this method is not the most practical for anyone, it can help put things in perspective because traveling is one of the newest experiences.
This is one of the greatest adventures you can go on, especially if you are traveling alone for an extended period of time, because it accelerates your cognitive development and gives you a range of emotions.
Therefore, if you're in college or working a job you don't like but are stuck, save some money and go on a year-long trip to see the world. While you're there, be open to yourself and discover more about your interests and desires.
