How to Create and Establish New Habits in Your Life?

There are several tips that you can follow to form a new good habit, including:

1. Focus on a new habit

The most dangerous thing that can prevent you from forming a new habit and impact the process negatively is ego depletion, which is defined as “a decrease in a person’s ability to arrange and organise their actions, feelings, and thoughts.”

Understanding this is necessary before learning how to form a new habit. You must focus on just one habit at a time. By doing so, you can focus your willpower on acquiring the selected habit, raising your chances of success. This is where you need to pose a crucial question to yourself: What new habit are you hoping to establish?

Answer this question with absolute honesty. Then, you should figure out everything you can do to get this habit right.

2. Form a new habit and practice it for a period of time of no less than a full month

Some of us think it usually takes at least 66 days to form a habit, while others think it only takes 21 days. This period varies from one person to another, as it depends heavily on their will, circumstances, and other factors.

Commit to a specific habit for no less than a full month, and then notice the results for yourself. Do you need more time or not? You are the one who determines this. However, during this month, you must allocate time to do this habit daily without boredom or laziness.

Good Habits

3. Turn the new habit you acquired into a permanent habit

Giving in to a passing desire is not a good idea when trying to form a new habit. Continue doing it until it becomes an automatic and natural habit in your life. By making a daily commitment, you can accomplish this.

4. Rely on taking small steps

Consolidating a new good habit requires lowering the level of commitment and taking small steps to make it a natural, automatic behaviour. Relying solely on fleeting desire and motivation risks leaving you without a backup plan in case of bad moods or stress from daily commitments.

Setting a realistic target here will help avoid failure. So, keep up your resolve and perseverance to fulfil this daily commitment. Here are some examples of partial commitment:

  • Read only one paragraph from your favourite book daily.
  • Walk for 10 minutes every day.
  • Eat only one serving of fruits and vegetables daily.

5. Set a plan for obstacles

When establishing any new habit, you might encounter some obstacles. Therefore, it is necessary to know in advance what the potential obstacles are so that you can overcome them by identifying alternative preventive measures. Here are some common obstacles when forming any new habit:

  • Weather conditions.
  • Costs.
  • Free time.
  • Time.
  • Self-perception and awareness.

Therefore, when you realise such obstacles, you can find appropriate solutions. For example, you can tell yourself, “If work pressure prevents me from walking today, I will make up the lost time by walking for 20 minutes tomorrow,” or “I'll get up early tomorrow and practice my new habit before anything else if I can't do it today,” and so on.

6. Reward yourself

One of the things that really helps you establish new good habits is to follow a self-reward system. Reward yourself when you accomplish any achievement, no matter how small. Even if the reward is simple, it will motivate you greatly to continue and retreat from any feeling of inaction that might afflict you.

7. Create a new identity

You can establish many good habits by committing to small daily actions, overcoming all the obstacles you face, and making a greater effort. In return, you can commit to all of the above without needing motivation and reinforcement by making these habits a part of your personal identity. You can establish permanent habits and make them a mirror reflecting your true self. You must be certain that these habits are part of what makes you a unique person.

Habits That Can Boost Your Energy

1. Practicing meditation and relaxation exercises daily for at least ten minutes

Meditation contributes to maintaining your energy throughout the day. It helps you stay more focused and calm, protects you from confusion, mental chaos, stress, and anxiety during the day, and prevents negative self-talk.

2. Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep every day greatly contributes to keeping you energetic and keeps you from feeling exhausted and tired. Therefore, it is recommended that you sleep from 6 to 8 hours. It is very useful to get used to sleeping at a certain hour and waking up at a certain hour as well.

3. Exercising

The importance and benefits of exercise are well known. It gives you high energy, helps you sleep deeply, and improves your mood and psychological state.

Good Habits

4. Following a healthy diet

Following a healthy diet that relies mainly on green vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and proteins will help you stay energetic throughout the day.

5. Taking dietary supplements

Taking dietary supplements, particularly those containing magnesium, vitamin C, and B vitamins, is crucial to boosting your energy levels.
