Narcissism: What is it?

A mental disorder known as narcissism is characterized by an individual's exaggerated sense of self-worth and a strong desire to win others' approval and attention. Despite their pride, individuals with narcissistic personality disorder experience a fragile sense of self-confidence. They make all of their decisions in their own best interests without considering how those decisions might affect other people.

We will discuss general narcissistic behavior in this article, which may or may not be indicative of a narcissistic identity disorder diagnosis.

The onset of adolescence and the beginning of adulthood are the first times that the behavior of the person shows signs of narcissism. The causes of this are undoubtedly numerous and complex, and they frequently include a combination of genetic and neurological factors that have to do with how the brain's nerves communicate with one another and how this affects the person's behavior and thoughts. There is always a defeated person behind every narcissistic personality, regardless of environment or upbringing.

There are more people who have narcissistic tendencies that could be harmful to those around them than the 6.2% of the US population who have narcissistic personality disorder, according to studies.

Acknowledging narcissism

It's critical to comprehend the causes of narcissistic personalities' behavior. It is unfortunate that their behavior may harm those around them even though they rarely mean to do so. It does not always mean that they are bad people, mean, or seek to harm everyone.

Although psychiatrists and psychologists do not fully understand what leads someone to develop narcissistic behavior, they do think it is influenced by a person's genes and upbringing.

According to some studies, narcissism is caused by parents who give their children excessive amounts of attention and who teach them that they are superior to everyone else and therefore deserve special treatment. It might also happen if parents treat them poorly and fail to give them the attention, love, and praise they deserve.

Whatever the causes of the development of narcissistic behavior, it is known that narcissistic personalities find it challenging to build trusting relationships, both personally and at work.

A narcissistic person's deliberate appearance of assertiveness and arrogance is revealed by psychological analysis, but the person is actually sensitive, has a troubled personality, and lacks self-confidence. Their sense of inferiority drives them to look for strategies to advance their destiny.

Various forms of narcissistic personalities

There are two types of narcissists. If you look around your workplace a little, you might find one. Look for the person who leans against a wall flaunting their new car, brags to everyone about the weight they lifted this morning in the gym, nods exaggeratedly, approaches others beyond reasonable limits, and speaks in a voice that goes beyond the bounds of tact.

The following exhibits overt narcissism

They are easily identifiable, as the person brag, show off, and boast.

Underlying narcissism

These people are adept at concealing their true selves. Instead of acting scandalously arrogant and hateful, you find them more calm and it is impossible to see their narcissism. However, they share the first type's hidden selfish motives and cruelty of their disregard for the feelings of others.

The person with overt narcissism always seeks to criticize and belittle those around them, whereas the person with hidden narcissism's methods are more malicious, and they may sometimes try to play the victim, claiming that you are to blame for everything and they did nothing wrong.

Similarly, narcissistic personalities are classified into two types in psychology. They are referred to as "superior narcissism" and "fragile narcissism," which is also referred to as "hypersensitive narcissism." Scientific studies on narcissists show that whether an individual is social or introverted determines which type they belong to, without affecting the narcissist's original cause or motives.

Symptoms of a narcissistic personality include

Narcissistic behavior is simple to spot, but treating people who have underlying narcissism takes more time.

According to one scientific study, the best way to recognize a narcissist is to have them rate their level of narcissism on a scale from 1 to 7. However, it is inappropriate to pose such a question because narcissistic individuals are good at discovering this information about themselves.

To identify a narcissist, instead, watch out for these indicators:

  • They frequently overstate their talents, particularly their intelligence, power, and beauty.
  • They exploit others without feeling bad about it.
  • They are looking for approval, focus, or both.
  • They are envious of the tiniest particulars.
  • A scientific study reveals that they are less inclined to hold political democracy in high regard.
  • Criticism or anything else they perceive as underestimating them makes them overly sensitive.
  • They are easily agitated and especially irritable when criticized.
  • If they do not receive special treatment, they might go insane.

Here are a few examples of narcissists' odd behavior

We will never be able to read other people's minds and understand their thoughts, conclusions, and motivations, but in addition to the warning signs listed above, you can tell if someone is narcissistic or has narcissistic tendencies by observing some peculiar behaviors that point to such tendencies.

1. They instantly comforts and trusts you

The narcissist gives you the impression that they have a high level of trust in you and that you are the only person they feel comfortable sharing personal information with, whether they are discussing their tumultuous divorce or their abusive relationship with their parents. They draw you into their life by using this kind of narrative to gain your empathy and foster an atmosphere of intimacy.

This type of behavior in relationships is referred to as "love drowning," and should always be seen as a red flag.

2. They repeat "secrets" they have previously shared with you

The narcissist tries in an incredible way to make you believe that what they are telling you is top secret, and they may try to convince you that they are a former intelligence agent, or something less clear.

For example, they tell you about the existence of a secret romantic relationship between two of your coworkers at work, or other rumors. The narcissist tells you secrets similar to the previous stories, but they are stranger.

They purposefully spread these "secrets," the majority of which are untrue, as part of their vulgar tales intended to impress others with their greatness or to sow discord by discrediting some individuals.

How should a narcissist be handled?

There is probably a narcissist nearby, which is why you chose to read this article. In order to help you maintain healthy boundaries, here are some advice:

1. Don't take it personally

Dealing with a narcissist or someone who exhibits narcissistic tendencies can be challenging and painful, whether they are a partner, ex-partner, friend, coworker, or family member. However, you must first understand that the problem is with the narcissist's personality, not with you.

It can be challenging to keep from taking criticism and reprimands personally, but try to look at it objectively. Is this person really attempting to manipulate you, or is it really your fault?

2. Establish boundaries between the two of you

There is nothing wrong with developing an emotional bond or even a friendship with a narcissist. In any case, you must be firm within the boundaries that you set, take into account your feelings, what you need to keep yourself happy and healthy, and communicate about it.

Keep in mind that they are people who suffer from a mental disorder, and each of us has our own flaws that despite them still deserve to be loved.

This might entail keeping your interactions with them within the limits of work or limiting the amount of time you spend reassuring and assisting them.

Set these boundaries and reaffirm them verbally by saying things like, "Please don't call me after 6:00 p.m.; it's family time," or "Stop cursing at me; it upsets me."

Keeping clear, preferably written, boundaries shows the narcissist that their manipulative methods won't succeed with you and that you are aware of all of their  transgressions and attempts to treat you disrespectfully. Having examples of what is considered to be crossing the line makes it easier for you to pay attention to the harmful and negative behaviors that you are exposed to at work.

Is your boss a narcissist?

It's challenging to work for a narcissist. You can frequently control your friendships and relationships, but it's unlikely that you can pick and choose your employer.

If your boss constantly seeks praise for other people's accomplishments, constantly boasts about their ability to close deals, and always put themselves and their personal work at the center of the conversation, you may be dealing with a narcissistic boss. If you are unsure, look over the narcissistic traits listed at the beginning of the article to see if they apply to your boss.

A narcissistic boss is frequently despised and infrequently regarded as a good leader. Unfortunately, you are limited to encouraging your coworkers when you are emotionally stable enough to do so and maintaining the boundaries between you and your boss because their employees are frequently discouraged and tired of such personal treatment.

Here are 4 ideas to get you started:

1. Bring about the change you desire

Join forces and work tirelessly to boost team morale and maintain an encouraging environment if there isn't proper leadership among the employees. This entails speaking up for your coworkers when they are unfairly reprimanded by your narcissistic boss, being kind and supportive of your coworkers, and continuing to improve yourself.

2. Take a break when necessary

When the tension starts to build, excuse yourself, leave the room, take a deep breath, and walk around the room for a while. When your boss starts to get angry with you or tries to make you feel guilty, you must be very clear with them that you do not approve of their behavior. You cannot control your manager's emotions, but you can control your own.

3. Remain distant

You may want your narcissistic boss to support you, but the likelihood of that happening is low, and it's generally wise to keep your distance from anyone who clearly exhibits narcissistic tendencies.

4. Refuse to accept your employer's invitation

Keep these meetings separate whenever they invite you out to lunch or just for a drink after work because you have an obligation to. A person who you know is manipulating others will inevitably be able to manipulate you if you become close to them.

Can narcissists change?

Yes, the narcissist can change, is the straightforward response, but there are many barriers keeping them from seeking help. Their awareness of the issue and their desire for change are the biggest barriers standing in their way of leading a healthy life because of their obsession with maintaining the appearance of the strong.

The narcissistic person needs to be aware that their behavior is bad for them personally, in addition to that they lack empathy for others, which makes it unlikely that they want to change for the benefit of their loved ones and those close to them.

To change, a narcissist needs to comprehend and accept these fundamental truths:

  • Their unfavorable emotions are nothing more than the results of their deeds.
  • They must reach a point of dissatisfaction with their behavior in order to inspire change.
  • They must acknowledge that their actions are solely a matter of personal choice and that they are free to alter them. A narcissist will probably find it hardest to get past this.
  • They need to develop the awareness of their narcissistic, destructive decisions and the motivation to alter them, even when they are depressed, enraged, or agitated.

There is no reason why the narcissist can't change if someone notices these behaviors in them and asks for assistance.
