We want to improve our lives and become the people we've always wanted to be. Despite our persistence, infinite self-loathing, and the number of self-help tools we resort to, we can't. So we come to the conclusion that it is far-fetched.

However, we see others smoothly doing what we find impossible, and we see ourselves as stupid because we're not doing our best.

Please put a stop to this. Even the best people have faced this problem, and what matters is the pursuit of reaching the top. Changing your life is a challenge. It is not as easy as growing our bodies older or growing seeds into trees. These two require complex processes that we do not see.

Rediscovering yourself requires a tremendous amount of hard work and patience. However, once you make a plan, your suffering will decrease and the journey will become smoother. So, don't give up. You can only rediscover yourself by laying the right groundwork.

Effective steps to discover yourself despite lacking motivation

Here are the following steps to help you do so:

1. Be honest with yourself

You want to rediscover yourself, but in order to do so, you must first make a crucial decision: you must be honest with yourself. Our society is changing quickly, and the present day is different from the past, but this change has benefits and risks. The risks are sometimes less obvious, so we race against time because we don’t want to miss out on anything.

Change is good; however, we must pay attention to our pace. Moving rapidly will not allow us to assess our options to determine the best one, and by moving slowly, we may lose good opportunities. How do we address these two problems? We do this by knowing what we want; we move at our own pace, and yet this can pose another problem.

We rely on social interactions because we are social beings. By understanding modernity and prevailing trends, we can communicate and develop our relationships, but our greed is the only roadblock. Everyone wants to shine and to belong, yet no one wants to stand out anymore because it is a lonely journey. So we are forced to seek out what we do not need.

James Clear wrote in one of his tweets: Our social status improves our lives for the sake of our society, but credibility does it for us, and you have to be honest not only to achieve your goals but to enjoy your life to the fullest. Be specific, redefine your goals based on what you need, and restructure your life accordingly.

Rediscover Yourself

2. Boost your motivation

The "why" behind your decision must be stated clearly. This allows you to understand why you should take this unknown step. It is your prime motivation, without which retreat is the likely outcome. So, why do you want to change?

You have to ask yourself these two questions:

  • Is it possible to change?
  • Does it seem logical?

Of course, realistic expectations encourage us to pursue our goals more. Still, a logical target gives us more motivation. We are more likely to understand change if the reason fits our way of making judgments. Justifying it based on “this is the right thing to do” will motivate you to try harder.

It will also prevent you from leading an empty life, and you will appreciate quality more than quantity. Perhaps you are eager to meet better friends because your old friends are wrong or to pursue your dream career because you are more competent in that field and you cannot imagine yourself advancing in your current domain.

Determine your motives in advance, no matter what the changes you want are. If they are reasonable and achievable, you can make that change.

3. Practice Mindfulness

You will panic when you take these new steps, whether there is a threat or not, and it will not be easy for you. You are outside your comfort zone, in an unfamiliar place, and you have no idea how to adapt. The experience will be bothersome, and it might stimulate negative thoughts and amplify their impact by taking advantage of your chaotic past, so be sure that the end is imminent unless you take your first step.

Because you are unable to deal with your thoughts, your emotions will control you and make you withdraw, so you have to be vigilant, and negative thoughts will not be able to affect you when you are awake.

You can learn from your negative thoughts, gradually get rid of them, and then invest what you have learned to improve the quality of your life. Everyone has to practice mindfulness, and once you acquire this skill, your inner voice will not be tough on you even on your tough days.

4. Track your progress

Quarterly reports show business investors how the company is doing. According to this data, they will decide whether to keep their investments, although they are not the only ones benefiting from these reports.

These procedures also help administrators determine the “status” of the company; they can identify what works and what doesn't and develop strategies to improve weaknesses and promote strengths.

Rediscover Yourself

So, what do I stand to gain?

By assessing yourself, you can track your progress toward achieving your goals. This way, you can improve the process of rediscovering yourself. You can do this alone or with a close friend. In fact, studies have shown that sharing this process with a close person is more effective.

  1. Participants in five groups in one study were given specific instructions as follows:
  2. Group 1 participants were tasked with reflecting on their goals and then assessing each of them.
  3. Groups 2 to 5 were asked to write down their goals and then assess them as Group 1 did.
  4. Group 3 did the same but added commitments and action points to its objectives.
  5. Group 4 was asked to add work commitments and then send them to a supportive friend.
  6. Group 5 added action obligations and sent its goals, commitments, and weekly progress reports to a supportive friend.

Group 5 was the most productive because of a simple addition: sharing their progress with a friend, perhaps because they wanted to impress them; Still, one thing is for sure; you can achieve more if you are accountable to yourself or a friend, if possible.

In conclusion

Rediscovering yourself isn't easy—we're changing how we used to live, even if we resent it—but it's reassuring and familiar, which is exactly what our new path is still lacking.

But using the above steps, you can make this change smoothly. So choose wisely. If you are not satisfied, there are many reasons to escape from that life and seek a better one.
