We all tell ourselves stories to explain our feelings. They give meaning to our lives, help us react to certain situations, and give us a basis to fall back on when we're not sure what to do.

The question is: Are you telling yourself the whole story? Do your stories serve you well? Are you able to be honest with yourself, or are you using your stories to cover up your true feelings? And you can have a relationship, a job, and friends when you're not being true to yourself, but you can never find true fulfillment. To make your life great, you have to learn how to be true to yourself so you can live what you really want.

How important is it to be true to yourself?

It is possible to live a full life without realizing that you are not being true to yourself. This is because most people don't get in touch with their emotions. If you want to live life to the fullest, don't be one of those people. Once you take control of your emotions, find your purpose, and start living your vision, you will discover a conviction and courage you never imagined.

The most passionate relationships are those between two people who are completely honest with themselves and each other, and the most satisfying careers are when we feel connected to what we really want out of life. When you learn to be true to yourself, you gain self-respect, compassion, and an unwavering belief in yourself.

Signs that you need to be true to yourself

If you feel that something is wrong in your life, like you've lost passion in your relationship, aren't excited about your career, or feel busy but unproductive, you need to learn how to be honest with yourself. Do any of these signs apply to you?

1. Self-sabotaging

Do you say you want one thing but then do something completely different? We destroy ourselves because, in reality, we fear success, and our limited beliefs tell us that we may lose respect, friendship, or more if we achieve success. Being honest with yourself means revealing those beliefs, even if they are painful.

2. Complaining a lot without taking any action

Do you constantly talk about hating your job but take no action to find a new one? Or do you like to complain about the lack of good men or women but don't bother trying to find new ways to meet people? It's time to be honest with yourself. You're enjoying the attention you're getting from complaining, but you're not making a real effort to change your situation.

3. Not handling criticism well

Do you get defensive when someone says their opinion of you? If the criticism seems reasonable, it may be because a part of you knows it is true. If you respond by being defensive rather than looking inward, it may be a sign that you need to be true to yourself.

Be Honest With Yourself

How to Be Honest With Yourself?

Once you've determined that you need to be true to yourself, it's time to take action, and it won't be fun. Rather, it may be painful, but it will open up a new world of possibilities and happiness.

Here are some tips:

1. Be vulnerable

There is nothing braver than allowing yourself to be vulnerable. Absolute courage and weakness are two of the five foundations of love, and this includes self-love. Whether you are working on a relationship with a significant other or your own, you will have to open up old wounds. So be willing to step into your feelings so you can face your fears head on.

2. Think about your decisions

Taking time each day to reflect will help you be true to yourself and will make you feel more fulfilled and grateful. So try to write in your diary at the end of each day and answer questions such as: “What did I do right today? And what can I actually do better tomorrow? How did my actions help me reach my ultimate goals or prevent me from reaching them?” When you write down your thoughts, it is very difficult to lie to yourself.

3. Imagine your future

Learning how to be true to yourself isn't just about thinking about your past. Dreaming of your perfect future often provides more clarity about what you really want. When you're 90, what's your biggest regret in life? What will give you more satisfaction? When you frame your life in this way, you begin to see what really matters to you.

4. Develop self-awareness

Have you ever said to someone, “You know me better than I know myself”? This may be true. Others see things in us that we cannot see, but if we are willing to ask for outside opinions, we can become more aware of ourselves.

“Self-awareness is one of the rarest human commodities,” says author Tony Robbins. When you become aware of your own patterns and why you are the way you are, you can finally begin to be true to yourself.
