When you’re happy at work, you feel a sense of personal satisfaction and commitment to what you do, who you do, and why you do it.

There are benefits to happy workplaces. These range from increasing productivity and customer loyalty to developing a large number of innovative products and decreasing the number of employee health leave days.

Happiness is positively associated with individual success in the workplace, such as high incomes, positive assessments, better teamwork, and social support from colleagues and supervisors. Happy staff are able to succeed despite adversity, endure tension, and maintain optimism.

Areas of happiness include the integrity of relationships, as well as mental and emotional integrity. These areas serve as pillars of support for workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dr. Emiliana R. Simon Thomas is Director of Science at the Greater Good Science Center, defines happiness at work as purpose, engagement, flexibility, and kindness. Happiness contributes to enhancing our overall emotional intelligence.

4 Emotional intelligence skills that raise happiness levels at work

1. Self-esteem

Happiness is a by-product of believing in yourself and living freely to behave according to your values. High levels of self-esteem promote positive feelings and build self-confidence. People with good self-esteem feel safe with their strengths and reconcile with their weaknesses.

  • Do you feel confident that you can achieve your full potential?
  • Do you acknowledge and accept your weaknesses while remaining optimistic and safe?
  • If you can improve one aspect of your self-confidence of work, what will you be? And why?

2. Self-improvement

Happiness at work comes from a desire to learn and grow on a journey in line with your values, and your openness to the pursuit of meaning and self-improvement makes your work satisfactory and enjoyable.

  • Are there opportunities for you to work to improve your talents?
  • Do you find meaning in your work and set difficult goals for yourself?
  • Do you constantly develop your skills and receive coaching?

3. Personal relationships

The most important thing you can do to increase happiness at work and live a happy life is to form useful, satisfying, and healthy relationships. It is close relationships that make people happy throughout their lives, and it acts as a barrier to reversing the negative effects of daily life’s requirements. If preserved, it promotes and maintains feelings of happiness.

  • Are there times when you experience your working relationships? If so, what causes this conflict? How can you address conflict and miscommunication?
  • Do you have a mentor? Or do you work as a mentor for someone else?
  • Do you feel as connected as possible with your team? If not, what steps can you take to improve the relationship?

4. Optimistic

When you experience a setback and disappointment, your ability to recover and restore a cheerful mindset depends on your level of optimism. Happy individuals and teams adopt a positive mentality during adversity, and happy teams recover more quickly than unhappy teams and are more productive in difficult times.

Did you know that happy development teams are designing programs well and fast? A positive outlook on work and life helps you thrive and take positive action toward goals.

  • What ideas help you stay optimistic during difficult times?
  • How can you share your optimism to increase motivation and productivity for those you work with?
  • Are there situations where you feel less optimistic? If so, how can you view these situations as hidden opportunities?

You can elevate your happiness at work by developing these emotional intelligence skills. It is not based on innate personality traits. They are areas of personal development you can practice, grow and develop.
