Still, whatever the challenge, you must be strong, see things with a new perspective, and decisively act if you want to pass this stage successfully.

It seems easy. We all want good friends, jobs, and relationships, but it's not because it's difficult to be mentally strong when you feel helpless. Still, only mentally strong people can break the rules of the ordinary and take a bold new direction that requires more perseverance and courage.

When people perceive obstacles as insurmountable, mentally strong people see them as challenges to overcome, and it is what distinguishes them from others.

When Thomas Edison's factory burned down in 1914, destroying one-of-a-kind prototypes and causing $23 million in damage, his response was simple: “Thank God all of our mistakes burned, and now, we can make a fresh start,” Edison's reaction is an example of mental toughness, the ability to see opportunity and take action when circumstances seem difficult.

Habits you can develop to improve your mental strength

There are habits you can develop to improve your mental strength because the distinguishing features of mentally strong people are strategies you can start applying today:

1. Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the foundation of mental strength. You cannot have mental toughness without the ability to understand and tolerate negative emotions and do something productive when you feel them. In other words, moments that test your mental strength also test your emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence, unlike cognitive intelligence, is a flexible skill that you can improve through understanding and making some effort. It is no wonder that 90% of high performers have high-level emotional intelligence and that people with high emotional intelligence make about $28,000 more yearly, on average, than their counterparts with low emotional intelligence.

Unfortunately, there is a lack of emotional intelligence skills. TalentSmart has tested more than a million people and found that only 36% can accurately identify their emotions immediately after feeling them.

2. Being confident

“Whether you think you're capable or incapable, you're right.” -Henry Ford

Mentally strong people believe that mindset impacts your capacity for success, and this idea is more than just a means of inspiration; It is a fact. According to a recent University of Melbourne study, confident people consistently receive higher pay and move up the corporate ladder more quickly than others.

Actual trust has its vision- as opposed to a false one - that people exhibit to cover up their fears. People with a strong mentality can control passive and erratic characters, motivate others with their assurance, and assist them in achieving their objectives.

3. Avoid toxic people

Most people find dealing with toxic people frustrating and stressful, but mentally strong people can manage their interactions with those people by controlling their emotions and dealing with confrontations rationally.

Even when things are complicated, mentally strong people can deal with toxic people to avoid exacerbating issues. They also control their emotions and do not let rage or frustration fuel chaos. They also take into account the toxic person's point of view.

4. Be flexible

Mentally strong people are flexible and can adapt to new situations constantly, knowing that fear of change slows their thinking and threatens their success and happiness. So, they look for potential changes and develop an action plan in case they occur.

When you accept change, you can benefit from it, so you must be open to taking advantage of the opportunities that change brings. Also, you must realize that when you ignore evolutions and continue to do things in the same way, you condemn yourself to failure because it is insane to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.

5. The ability to refuse

Research conducted at the University of California in San Francisco has shown that the harder you reject, the more likely you are to experience stress, fatigue, and even depression. So, mentally strong people know that rejection is sometimes healthy, and they have the self-esteem and insight to explain why they reject it.

When it is time to say no, mentally strong people avoid ambiguous statements like, “I do not think I can” or “I do not know.” They say “No” with confidence, knowing that refusing a new dedication boosts their respect for their existing commitments and allows them to fulfill them.

Mentally strong people also know how to exercise self-control by rejecting their instincts and staying in their comfort zone, so they postpone the desire for gratification and avoid reckless actions that cause harm.

6. Recognize that fear is the number one source of regret

Mentally strong people are not afraid to take risks because they understand that fear will make them regret missed opportunities more than they will be troubled by failure. When you fear, ask yourself if the worst-case scenario will involve your death. Certainly not. However, death is not the worst thing that can happen to you, but the worst thing is the feeling of death inside you while you are alive.

It takes mighty self-awareness to balance thinking about your mistakes and not dragging behind them. Deep thinking about your mistakes for a long time makes you anxious and shy, while completely forgetting them may lead you to repeat them. The key to balance lies in your ability to turn failures into lessons to learn from and improve so you can get up after each time you fall.

7. Acceptance of Failure

Mentally strong people accept failure because they know that it is one of the ways to succeed and that no one succeeds without trying to fail.

Your mistakes usually pave the way for success, and your magnificent achievements may come when you feel frustrated, forcing you to think differently, look outside the box, and find the solution you've been missing.

8. Lack of focus on past mistakes

Mentally strong people know that the things you focus on determine your emotional state. When you focus on the problems you face, you prolong negative emotions and stress, which hinders your performance. However, when you focus on the actions you must take to improve yourself and your circumstances, you create a sense of personal competence, which helps you feel positive emotions and improve performance.

Mentally strong people distance themselves from their mistakes without forgetting them; they only keep them at a safe distance to remember them in times of need and learn from them to succeed.

9. Let no one undermine their joy

When your sense of pleasure and satisfaction is derived from comparing yourself to others, you will not be in control of your happiness, so when mentally strong people feel good about something they do, they will not let the opinions or achievements of others undermine their joy.

While it's impossible to stop people from expressing their opinions about you, you don't have to compare yourself to others even if you're going to take their views into account, and mentally strong people realize that they're not as good or as bad as others think they are.

10. Not to limit the pleasure of others

Mentally strong people do not judge others because they know each role they play. They do not feel the desire to belittle anyone to feel good about themselves.

Comparing yourself to others limits your abilities. Jealousy and resentment steal your life and energy, so mentally strong people do not waste their time or energy preoccupying others. Instead of feeling jealous, they appreciate others and celebrate the success of others.

11. Exercise

A study conducted at the Eastern Ontario Research Institute found that people who exercised twice a week for ten weeks felt more socially, intellectually, and athletically competent and had a higher appreciation for their body shape and subjectivity.

Best of all, instead of physical changes being responsible for increased confidence - which is core to mental strength - it was the immediate feeling of positivity caused by the release of endorphins during exercise that made the difference.

12. Get enough sleep

Good sleep is critical to increasing your mental strength because when you sleep, your brain gets rid of the toxic proteins that your brain produces when you are awake, which the mind can only remove during sleep. Then, when you do not get enough sleep, the toxic proteins remain in your brain cells, which weakens your ability to think and cannot be fixed with sufficient caffeine.

Mentally strong people know that their ability to self-control, focus, and remember is reduced when they don't get enough sleep, so they prioritize good sleep.

13. Reducing caffeine drinking

Drinking large amounts of caffeine leads to the release of the hormone adrenaline, which is the source of the fight-or-flight response that response prompts you to avoid rational thinking to achieve a faster response to ensure survival, which is great when a bear is chasing you. Still, it is not the proper behavior to deal with life's problems.

When caffeine puts your mind and body under excessive stress, your emotions overwhelm your behavior, and the caffeine takes a long time to get out of your body. Mentally strong people know that excessive caffeine is a problem, so they limit it as much as possible.

14. Apology is not a condition for forgiveness

Mentally strong people know that life becomes smoother once we let go of grudges and forgive even those who have never apologized for what they have done. Grudges allow past negative events to destroy today's happiness and let hatred and anger kill our joy.

The negative emotions that come with holding onto a grudge create a response to stress in your body, which can lead to dangerous consequences physically and mentally. Forgiving someone doesn't mean condoning their actions, but forgiving frees you from being their victim forever.

15. Be Positive

If you follow the news for a while, you will see that it only talks about wars, violent attacks, fragile economies, failed companies, and environmental disasters, which makes you feel that the world is about to end. Mentally strong people do not worry about that because they do not occupy themselves with things they cannot control. Still, they focus their energy on directing attention and efforts that are within their power.

Mental strength is not an innate quality given to a select few; it is a skill you can develop and enjoy.
