Note: This article is based on the work of Erin Falconer, in which she discusses the role of self-discipline and willpower in achieving success.

The habit discussed in the article turns the scales; it can even help one achieve more success.

I would like to discuss at the outset the results of my own research

Author Malcolm Gladwell surveyed intelligent individuals from all over the world for his book Outliers, following them from infancy to adulthood. The results showed that these individuals achieved outstanding successes at the beginning of their lives but quickly lost their luster as they aged and ended up in the gutter without achieving any significant success.

The key factor in achieving success

Most individuals believe that IQ is a constant measure of a particular skill and is the decisive factor in achieving success, and this is a wrong concept. Most individuals use this belief as an excuse to shirk the responsibility to improve their lives and to stick to laziness that prevents their progress.

The secret of success lies in willpower. A study was conducted on many wealthy people, and I discovered that the secret of their success lies in self-discipline and willpower. I also recently read the book 15 Productivity Secrets, which contains dialogues with wealthy people. One of the billionaires in the book states that during their life, they met a lot of individuals who exceeded them in intelligence, but they were unable to commit to working to achieve their goals, so they were less successful despite their high IQ.

The secret to success lies in self-discipline and doing things that others cannot do because they are weak-willed. The American businessman John Paul DeJoria once said: “A successful person does things that his failed counterpart does not want to do because of weak will.”

You have to work to increase your willpower and discipline by doing simple daily work that contributes to improving your future life. You can increase the effectiveness of the process by reading more books related to business and projects, earning money, or exercising longer in the gym.

Studies show that willpower is more like a muscle, meaning that when you exhaust it one day, you will be prone to making irrational decisions. Do not strain your willpower, but use it wisely, so you can exercise it, polish it, and become stronger over time.

The Secret to Success

Lessons learned from the article so far

  • Talent is not born in successful people; it is acquired.
  • The secret to success lies in willpower, and one can work to refine and strengthen their will, but most individuals do not bother to try.
  • Some individuals use false beliefs to justify the state of laziness and failure that pervades their lives.

American actor Will Smith said in an interview that he does not have an exceptional talent, attractive appearance, agility, or intelligence that surpasses his middle-class colleagues, and he attributes his success to his work ethic and willingness to do what it takes to succeed.

Investing wasted time in meaningful activities

Most individuals argue that they do not have enough time to do extra work during the day, and they feel exhausted from their already normal lifestyle and do not risk doing more. It should be noted that most of these people waste several hours a day watching silly TV shows or having meaningless chats with friends.

You ought to think about a dream you want to achieve so that all fears are marginalized and all possible difficulties are overcome. I advise you to write down your daily activities and discover for yourself the amount of time wasted on pointless activities, which I have personally applied, and I discovered that I waste about 4-5 hours a day after 5 p.m.

The following is an example of absurd daily activities

  • Dinner - 30 minutes.
  • Watch videos on YouTube - one hour.
  • Browse the internet – one hour.
  • Browse social media – one hour.
  • Play video games (or gaming apps) – one hour.
  • Chat with friends at the gym – 30 minutes.

I deliberately overestimated the aforementioned wasted time to clarify my point of view. Individuals in general, without exception, waste several hours of their time on their usual working days. You will discover that you waste 3-6 hours a day doing useless activities, and their duration can be reduced, not to mention the massive amount of time wasted on holidays.

I suggest that you imagine the life you dream of living three years from now and then determine the activities that will help you achieve your goal and those that will hinder you and delay the process. Chats on social networking sites or watching videos on YouTube will not help you achieve your dreams, but doing the right tasks will do the job and help you achieve your goal. These tasks vary from person to person according to their goals and field of work; for example, it may be spending more time marketing the company's services.

Now that you've identified meaningful activities

  1. Select one task.
  2. Set aside an extra 10 minutes to work on it daily.
  3. Start by setting aside a small amount of time so you don't burn out.
  4. Gradually increase the duration so you can effectively invest the entire time lost.
  5. Try to make the process fun so you don't burn out.

These steps ensure that you reach the heights of glory in a short time.
