Willpower is a difficult thing to acquire. Some people rush into the summer, thinking that exercise will help them get fit again. But when winter arrives and they can hide their extra weight under bulky winter clothing, they lose interest in improving their lifestyle. Nonetheless, they should be content with their bodies and ways of living all year round.

Five ways to strengthen willpower

1. Use reminder apps

Commitments and duties vary daily, but the ultimate goals must remain constant until they are achieved. The issue is that goals become lost in the hustle of day-to-day activities, obsessions, appointments, and responsibilities.

There are simple ways to remember goals, priorities, and things you want to do. You can renew your willpower and mental abilities in difficult times by using reminder apps to remember important things when needed.

Technology tools help you remember your high-priority goals, such as Tasker on Android, Reminders on iPhone, and Things on Mac. Here are some ways to use these tools to remember important things:

  • Journaling your gratitude plays a prominent role in reminding you of the blessings in your life. Use a mobile application to keep a gratitude diary, especially if you tend to forget because of your preoccupations.
  • Drinking water is essential to improving health and vitality. Use mobile apps to remind you to drink.
  • Some people find it very difficult to head to the gym after work. If you’re one of them, use a mobile app to listen to motivating and fun speeches on your way to the gym.
  • Communicating with old friends is often the last priority, although we are glad when we meet them. For this reason, use an app to remind you of friends you have not been in touch with in a very long time.

2. Include activities in your schedule

Some people use work pressures and insufficient time to do certain activities that are not among their priorities. These activities often do not need much time, and you must make them a priority from now on.

I used to review and re-assess my schedule whenever I felt overwhelmed, stressed, or lacked time. Willpower is influenced by energy and vitality, which means that feeling tired drains willpower. I mentioned earlier that I review my schedule and am keen to set fixed times to do the activities I love. Here are some of the methods I use in this regard:

  • I used to exercise in the morning before breakfast, which is why I make sure not to have meetings during this period. This method helps me commit to exercise and feel good about it, and then I will not worry or feel negligent.
  • I feel comfortable and joyful when I meet my friends, which is why I make sure to schedule an appointment on my schedule to meet my close friends and family members for lunch or coffee regularly.
  • I was unable to find time to read when I was busy, but it is very critical to me, which is why I set a fixed time in my schedule to read regularly.

3. Bet on success

Bets are used in self-development to motivate individuals and increase their willpower. By nature, one does not like to lose money. Here are some examples:

  • When someone uses the GymPact app, for instance, they won't miss work because, upon committing to the app, they will receive a financial incentive and will pay a certain amount of money if they miss work.
  • My husband bet on reading 20 pages daily, and the loser paid a certain amount because he could not find time to read.
  • I used to find cleaning and homework boring until I discovered the Chore Wars app. This app encourages families and roommates to clean by pitting them against one another. That makes cleaning more enjoyable, as you're collecting points and rewards.

4. Eliminate distractions

I cannot describe how difficult it is to stay away from social media. This problem very common and is especially prominent while working on a difficult task. Browsing these sites becomes a bad habit one resorts to whenever they have difficulty thinking at work to distract their mind from the problem and escape the pain. There are some tools that help encourage us to acquire new habits when we do not have enough willpower, including:

  • “Freedom” completely blocks the Internet from the device for a period specified by the user, which is specific to Mac devices. Once this tool is activated, the user does not connect to the Internet until the specified time limit expires, and at this period, they will have to work.
  • “SelfControl” allows the user to block certain websites while connected to the Internet. So, I used to activate this tool and block social networking sites when I needed to use the Internet at work, which helped me increase my productivity.

5. Clarify the purpose of the activity

By experience, the willpower necessary to achieve goals and make lasting life changes requires clarifying the purpose. I have had outstanding achievements in my life when I set my eyes on a clear goal and devoted my time and effort to working on it so that failure became impossible. For example:

  • My desire to stay healthy for my future children pushes me to commit to exercise, which is a stronger motivation than my desire to lose weight and wear the clothes I love.
  • My desire to hand over new tasks and projects to my team drives me to work on growing my business, which is a stronger motivation than making money.
  • I visit my parents regularly because I am grateful for everything they have done for me, which is more important to me. After all, it’s our duty.
