Self-improvement is similar to riding a horse or a bike. Sometimes, you pick up too much speed and take a tumble, or you go too slow and still end up on the ground. Sometimes, even when you do everything by the book, you might still face problems. In such cases, the circumstances are the ones to blame- not you.

The takeaway here is not to allow fear to stop you from moving forward in life. Accept that stumbling and failing every now and then is perfectly fine—it's a natural part of your journey. On the other hand, giving up on your quest for self-improvement and quitting following a setback is inexcusable.

When you’re drowning in setbacks and disappointment, your growth hinges on how quickly you bounce back from them and your determination to try again. We'll go through several stages of failure in self-improvement to help you understand that these obstacles and fruitless endeavours are a normal part of life, not to downplay the struggles that everyone encounters. There's nothing wrong with going through them.

The Seven Stages of Failure in Self-Improvement

1. Use Humour to Turn Failure into a Positive Experience

This usually happens before the humour and joy wear off, before you start entertaining hopeless thoughts, or before you realise how unlikely success is. The sun is still shining brightly, radiating hope and optimism. At this stage, you might have bitten off more than you can chew out of pure zeal, but you're not at all prepared to quit.

2. Facing Failure: Perseverance Is the Key to Success

In this stage, you are determined to succeed no matter what, so you dive in and commit to your goal. With unwavering resolve, you move ahead, getting back into your routine and getting ready for whatever misstep might come next.

3. Turning Failure into Steps for Success

This is when doubt starts to rise. Your confidence wavers, and you begin secretly questioning what you might be doing wrong. At first, it didn't seem that difficult, but now you find yourself questioning if you're not meant to be a better person. You decide to sleep on it, and the next morning, you shake off the doubts and convince yourself to try again. Today is a new day, full of endless possibilities and surprises.

4. Failure Is a Challenge-Filled Journey With No Surrender

At this stage, you start telling yourself a story about how hard and unattainable this change will be. Your mind is excited to have the chance to compose a whole new story, even though you've managed to tell everyone you meet about your previous one. So, you start vocalising your thoughts and blaming yourself for trying to learn new things since your ideas are still old, and you feel incapable of trying anything new or incorporating it into your life.

It seems that all of your self-improvement experiences have been fruitless and pointless. You forget half of what you recently learned and become afraid of slipping back into your old habits.

5. Failure Is a Journey from Ignorance to a New Start

At this stage, you start wondering if those who have criticised your actions for being nonsensical might be right. You doubt yourself and wonder why you can’t seem to grasp and master what you’re doing. You become frustrated and disappointed in yourself for making a mistake.

Depression or anger replaces fear. You start to get upset with the world and keep telling yourself, "Everything I do is meaningless and useless. No one cares anyway because they’re all just a bunch of selfish idiots.”

6. Repeated Failure and Continuous Learning

Your friends start mocking you. You feel worse than you did when you were blissfully ignorant without all this new understanding. In fact, had you known it would be this tough, you might have stayed comfortably asleep the whole time. And you start wondering when life will finally get easy and blame yourself for setting such high and unrealistic goals.

7. Surrender and Retreat: The End of Self-Improvement Attempts

At this stage, you give up. You might try something new later. In the worst-case scenario, you do nothing at all. It's as if you’ve completely given up on yourself and lost all confidence. Unfortunately, most people at this stage become obsessed with finding solutions, become self-help seminar addicts, and always search for quick fixes to what they should do to become the person they know they can be eventually.

The moral of the story is that your growth is an ongoing process. It all comes down to the trajectory of your life and how you choose to navigate it. When you resist your destiny or try to shortcut your journey to reach your goals quickly, you usually get stuck in the same place without any notable progress.

Frustration creeps into your life because you’re trying, with all your might, to completely change the course of your life instead of taking small steps towards it. Therefore, you should always feel proud of yourself because just attempting is a win.

To Sum Up

The journey of self-improvement isn't easy, but it’s important for leading a better life. Don’t give up; keep moving forward; learn from your mistakes, and stay persistent. In the end, you will reach your goals.
