Most of us do not understand ourselves. This is reflected in chaos in the senses and actions and distance from goals. This chaos we live in is the result of not being properly and effectively aware of ourselves.

Most of the challenges we face due to a lack of self-awareness manifest in the following points:

  1. Emotional instability and disarray.
  2. The disappearance of objectives and the scattering of our long-term visions.
  3. The anxiety and stress that we experience in life as a result of our lack of self-awareness.
  4. Poor relationships with our closest friends and other people.

What is self-awareness?

Emotions left unexamined tend to surface and drive a person instead of being guided by them.

We define self-awareness as the ability to look at ourselves as an open book that we want to comprehend very comprehensively in order to find a way out of this problem and organize our daily lives. That is to say, self-awareness is where each of us must begin. The word self-awareness may sound unusual, but is there anyone out there who does not know themselves?

In fact, self-awareness does not mean at all that you know yourself, that you prefer white over black, or that you prefer working at night over working during the day. Instead, the term self-awareness represents a much deeper dimension than those small details that we are aware of in our daily lives. A person's self-awareness is like a journey that starts from outside to dive into their inner depths to get to know their true essence as a human being.

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 explains what the concept of self-awareness means: “Your automatic emotional reactions to anything occur before you even have a chance to respond, and because feelings are an integral part of the equation, managing yourself and your relationships means being aware of the scope. Be full of your feelings first, whether positive or negative.”

The question that we can all think of is: “How can one set themselves up to start practicing self-awareness in order to organize their life?”

The starting point for understanding oneself lies in dedicating some daily time to reviewing one's feelings and pausing to comprehend them. Emotions left unexamined tend to surface and drive a person instead of being guided by them. This can lead to chaos in one's daily life, with the damage accumulating day by day.

It is very important for one to understand oneself and gain self-awareness in order to have the courage and honesty to confront oneself. This confrontation may be annoying at times, but it is very necessary. Without honesty and courage, one cannot achieve effective communication with oneself.

The key to success

All of the aforementioned is worthless prose if we don’t have a self-understanding mechanism to gain self-awareness that we reflect on the ground in order to reap actual results in our daily lives. This is possible by following a set of therapeutic steps that help one achieve effective self-awareness that reflects positively on the arrangement of their daily life. These steps are:

1. Avoid classifying your feelings

By nature, a person tends to sort out their feelings and divide them into good feelings and bad feelings, and studies indicate that the human nervous system believes these feelings and works to confirm them as an existing fact.

When a person experiences a feeling of guilt, they automatically classify the feeling of guilt as a negative feeling they don’t want to experience. Because of the assertions of the nervous system, a person may make an effort to get rid of it, and in return, it unleashes positive feelings and lives those feelings in all their details, and here lies the problem.

This classification hinders one from understanding the reality of those feelings, the reasons for their appearance, and whether they are real or imaginary.

2. Observing the impact of feelings on oneself and others

When one of us throws a stone into a pool, for instance, we immediately observe the emergence of a set of circular ripples as a result of the interaction of the stone with the water's surface. If we give it some thought, however, we realize that our feelings are very much like those circular waves.

Our feelings, whether positive or negative, are like that stone, and yours and others’ reactions towards your feelings are similar to those formed circles. Therefore, it is very important for each person to fully know the impact of their feelings and emotions on themselves and on others. Their accurate awareness of their feelings helps them to accurately organize their daily lives.

The common misconception that feelings only have a temporary impact is what most people struggle with, but the reality is completely different. A person must therefore pause and think about their actions in order to understand how their feelings affect both themselves and other people.

The more insight they have into how their feelings affect both themselves and other people, the more freedom they have to decide how they want to affect both themselves and other people.

3. Write down your feelings

Since it is human nature to avoid upsetting emotions and whose awareness helps one effectively realize one's true essence, avoiding upsetting emotions is only a temporary fix and cannot be relied upon in self-management. Let's be honest and say that this is one of the most significant barriers to achieving self-awareness.

The best way to see oneself clearly and remember their preferences is to write down all of their feelings, whether they are positive or negative. This method effectively aids one in developing self-awareness, which aids one in arranging their life based on those preferences. As a result, one must be objective when looking at their feelings.

4. Always ask yourself about the reasons for your actions

Asking persistent questions about the causes of the feelings that arise in them and the motivations behind their actions must go hand in hand with how a person comes to understand themselves and achieve the highest level of self-awareness.

These inquiries are regarded as the key that unlocks the window of feelings. The ability to pay attention to one's feelings is the most lovely aspect of this technique.

Knowing the reasons behind one's actions makes one more ready to regulate and control their emotions, and managing one's moods and feelings inevitably affects how one arranges their daily lives.

In conclusion, make up your mind now

We all know that life goes by fast. We are all forced to deal with its complex events with all their pros and cons, and the basic human responsibility lies in maintaining the psychological balance that enables us to prioritize our lives.

The key to keeping that balance is self-awareness, which may be developed by communicating with oneself, writing about feelings, and asking oneself why we behave the way we do. In other words, the idea of self-awareness can be summed up as an exploratory journey into one's inner self with objectivity, bravery, and honesty.
