What Does An Intellectual Mean?

There are many definitions of the term 'intellectual,' and some of the most notable ones include:

  1. According to Chomsky, the intellectual is the one who upholds truth in defiance of power.
  2. Foyer defined the intellectual as the individual whose ideas transcend their profession, focusing on genuine issues and real problems."
  3. According to Schiller, they are a subset of the educated, striving to mold the conscience of their society towards a more enlightened path, wielding influence over significant societal decisions.
  4. Contemporary societies perceive intellectuals as individuals who can engage and navigate various ideas and cultures.

Characteristics Of The Intellectual

Numerous commendable traits define the intellectual individual, and among these are the following:

1. Honesty

An intellectual person values honesty, unable to resort to lies even in trivial matters. Deceit is seen as disrespectful to their audience, putting them in an uncomfortable position. They also avoid idle chatter and refrain from imposing their opinions on others.

2. They Value Their Talents

Intellectuals value their inherent talents,  acknowledging their value even if it means sacrificing comfort. They tirelessly work to refine and develop these abilities, understanding that true success requires both innate talent and unwavering perseverance.

3. Empathy

The intellectual empathizes with all creatures, whether human or animal, showing a profound sensitivity to injustice and suffering and global events.

4. Dignity

The intellectual upholds dignity, avoiding self-diminishment to evade others' pity. They stay composed and refrain from harm or misconceptions. Moreover, instead of complaining, they persistently seek solutions and harness their surroundings for their benefit.

5. Humility

The intellectual is humble and unswayed by the allure of fame or exclusivity, chooses shadows over the spotlight, and shuns any urge to flaunt their knowledge.

6. Respectful

The intellectual respects others' thoughts and behaviors, even when they differ. They embody flexibility, embracing diverse personalities and perspectives. Furthermore, they exhibit kindness and tolerance, even towards those who might be bothersome to them.
