In addition, failure has a destructive shock-wave that can weaken one's self-esteem, allows shame, guilt and inferiority to take place, and erases one's self-respect.

Academic failure is a type of failure that threatens the future of students and haunts their parents. In our current world that witnesses new inventions and technologies daily, uneducated people are being pushed into the corner since science is the most effective way to keep pace with this rapid development. It’s important to keep in mind that academic achievement is the backbone of acquiring knowledge.

In fact, failing academically is normal, but giving up and refusing to keep moving forward is an abnormal and unacceptable thing. In this article, we will introduce you to some effective methods to deal with academic failure.

The definition of academic failure

Before tackling the topic of academic failure, we must first understand what the term "academic failure" mean. According to the dictionary, failure is the state or condition of not meeting a desirable or intended objective. Based on that, academic failure means the state or condition of not meeting desirable or intended academic-related objectives. For example, if a student aspires to pass a test, then they would consider failing at it as an academic failure. If a student aspires to achieve a certain score, then achieving a less score would be considered as an academic failure to them.

Therefore, academic failure is a relative concept that differs from one student to another. However, generally speaking, it means getting low grades or failing repeatedly until dropping out of school.

Effective Methods to Deal with Academic Failure

Reasons of academic failure

In order to deal with academic failure, one must be aware of the reasons that cause it.

  1. Lack of belief in the importance of academic achievement and its role in improving the individual's educational, social and professional status.
  2. The dominance of frustrating thoughts and feelings over the student's minds makes them feel unqualified to succeed academically. This is caused by the negative prejudgments imposed on them by their educational and surrounding environment.
  3. Events that were beyond the student's control that limited his comprehension of the academic content, such as being absent from class due to a physical illness. Mental illnesses or the student's lack of eligibility to learn are two potential reasons as well, in addition to psychological traumas such as the death of a loved one or other traumas that make the student distracted or absent-minded in the classroom.
  4. Other factors that limit the student's comprehension of the academic content are studying in a foreign language, insufficient explanations provided by the teacher, or the fact that the student needs special treatment.
  5. One must eliminate the misconception that fear motivates success. Ironically enough, the fear of academic failure may actually cause it, especially if the student has experienced it previously.
  6. Growing up in a dysfunctional family or being exposed to verbal and physical violence.

How to deal with academic failure?

1. Accept failure

Dealing with failure takes place after accepting it. It may be difficult to accept it, but it's a fact that no one can overcome their failure unless they accept it first. Therefore, acceptance is the first step in dealing with your academic failure. Keep in mind that it's fine to fail as long as you get up and keep moving forward.

A famous proverb states that “You’re not a good horse rider unless you’ve fallen off several times.” Therefore, academic failure can be seen as this falling, which will ultimately result in being an excellent rider. Academic failure has nothing to do with the student's capabilities. The great inventor, Thomas Edison, for example, dropped out of school. However, he became one of the greatest scientists in history.

2. Reasoning

We must take advantage of previous experiences and extract lessons after overcoming our ordeals. Dealing with academic failure requires the student to be aware and calm while reviewing the events that caused his failure.

If the student's language incompetence leads him to fail, then working on improving his language skills would solve the problem. If this failure is caused by external distractions, such as work, then the student should eliminate these distractions.

3. Surround yourself with successful people

Academic failure may simply be caused by bad people. In such cases, one must cut ties with unsuccessful people and be surrounded by successful ones. As the well-known proverb states, "Birds of a feather flock together."

4. Be faithful

The educational journey can be overwhelming and, in some cases, can lead to serious mental harm for students. For this, one must be faithful and sincere throughout their educational journey.

Methods that help you deal with academic failure

The following contains some methods that help you deal with academic failure, overcome it, and take advantage of it as motivation for success:

Overcoming fear of academic failure

It's crucial to eradicate your fear of academic failure because fear is one of the main reasons for it. Although this fear isn't desirable, considering the bright side, it shows that the student aspires to succeed. Here are some tips that may help overcome this fear:

  1. Surrender to God's will and destiny.
  2. Keep in mind that your fear of failure distracts you and can lead you to actually fail. For this, instead of imagining your failure, be faithful and study well.
  3. Be emotionally intelligent and learn how to control your fear. Emotional intelligence prevents you from suppressing your fear, helps you deal properly with your negative feelings, and makes you act logically.
  4. You should keep in mind that although academic success is important, you can still be successful in life even without achieving it.
