In our work, my wife and I listen to hundreds of clients we coach each month. Through this experience, we've often dealt with the negative thought patterns that destroy people, and we've witnessed the devastation that negativity causes on their personal and professional growth as well as on their relationships.

Note: This article is based on a blog post by Marc Chernoff, in which he presents 9 negative ideas that drive people away from you.

Let's be honest: we all think negatively at times. None of us is immune to negative thoughts that creep into our minds. However, this does not mean that we should give in to them, whether your negative thinking is recurrent or occasional. The key to your long-term happiness and success is to be able to recognize when you are thinking negatively and turn it into positive thinking.

Nine of the most common negative thoughts people struggle

1. “I must be exactly like how others want me to be.”

Life provides you with an invaluable opportunity every moment to see and experience your true identity, so take it. Sometimes we get completely lost trying to live to please others and meet their expectations by doing things just to impress them.

Slow down and contemplate: Are you doing things because you really believe in them? Remember your needs and goals, and remember who you are. Live your life and give love so that you can be happy too, because you will only be honest with others when you are honest with yourself.

2. "I don't like them because they are different."

Promise yourself to prevent tragedies before they begin, to breathe deeply and peacefully, and to love yourself and others unconditionally. Make a promise to laugh at your mistakes and to realize that no one is perfect, as we are all humans. Self-esteem can only flourish when we value our differences, forgive our mistakes, liberate communication, and set flexible rules.

3. “They have it easier than I do.”

No one has it easier than you. Each of us fights our own battles. The strongest are not those who show evident strength but those who won internal battles that we know nothing about. If you assume that someone has it easier than you, nothing will happen except that you will set a barrier between the two of you.

4. “I don't have enough (or I'm not enough) to make a difference.”

One of the greatest things you can achieve in life is to help someone else while you are going through a difficult situation. No matter what is happening in your life, be kind, think before you speak and act, and always remember that your words and actions might be forgiven but not forgotten. You can make a difference. So, take every opportunity to do so and know that your good deeds, no matter how simple, will not be wasted.

5. "It's their fault."

If you blame others for the things they did or did not do for a long time, you will remain where you are until you bite the dust. Blaming others is easy because it means that you do not have to do anything other than stand still.

This is not life; it is death. Accepting where you are now without blame and seizing the opportunities that the present provides for you every moment is what enlivens your experiences and relationships and ultimately drives you forward.

6. “I will never forgive them.”

We often keep our hearts closed, not because we do not trust others to not leave us, fail us, or stop loving us, but because we do not trust that we will survive after they do. The strange thing is that it is only through suffering these losses that we realize our real strength. The truth be told, love requires a strong heart, but it takes a stronger heart to continue to love after being hurt.

For example, if someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart, forgive them because they taught you the meaning of trust and the importance of being careful when you open your heart. You are stronger now and more prepared to find the kind of love you deserve. The bottom line is: Don't let the wrong people from your past keep you away from the right people in your present. So forgive and move on.

7. “I am too busy for family and friends at the moment.”

The people you underestimate today might be the only ones you need tomorrow. Don't get so busy that you can't make time for the people you care about. Sooner or later, you will want to be around those special people who put a smile on your face. So make time for those who help you love yourself more, even when you are busy, as they deserve it.

8. "It's okay not to tell the truth sometimes."

It is unfortunate to see so many people shocked by the truth and so few shocked by deception. Don't be one of those, and always hold on to the truth. Those who get easily startled should be shocked more, and you should shock them with your honest words and actions every single day. The bottom line here is: An honest, loving heart starts everything that is right in this world. It is what brings us together and keeps us together through thick and thin.

9. “My mistakes prove that I am a failure.”

This mentality will drive you and everyone around you crazy. If you finish your day and complete your tasks, you have done the best you can. There is no doubt that some mistakes will happen, but forgive and forget them as soon as you can. Keep in mind that your failure does not define you; your determination does. Failure is simply an opportunity to start over, smarter than before. Tomorrow is a new day that you must start peacefully with high spirits to reject the old nonsense.

In Conclusion

If you are dealing with any of these negative thoughts, remember that you are not alone. We all have some negativity deep down that can creep up on us at times. The important thing is to be aware, identify these negative thoughts when they appear, and stop them.
