One morning, I met a friend at a nearby coffee shop. She had her work laptop with her so she could present some of her most recent digital artwork.

Note: This article is based on the work of the writer Marc Chernoff, in which he tells us about his experience of giving up some old habits that were hindering his progress.

We were chatting and reviewing her work when the laptop started making strange noises, then the screen started flickering on and off until it blacked out. As we stared at each other in shock, the smell of burned computer circuits filled the air.

I quickly grabbed the laptop from the table to check it and immediately detected the problem: the bottom of the computer was wet, and an empty glass of water spilled next to her bag just behind where the laptop was. A cup of water was somehow spilt as we were moving the computer between us throughout our talk, and we weren't aware of it because the waiter had unintentionally placed it on the table behind the screen.

Our emotional and natural reactions may be extreme annoyance and screaming as loudly as we can when life surprises us with bad situations like this one, as it is usually not understood or logical to us. But how does this help solve our dilemma? Undoubtedly, it is not the answer.

My friend raised her hands in the air, I half-smiled in surprise, and she said, “ That's exactly why I backed up my files this morning, and I have full insurance on my laptop.”

I was really moved by her response, as the majority of people I know have experienced breakdowns in much less upsetting situations than this. What about you? How frequently have you had emotional responses to life that weren't in your best interests? If you are like the majority of people then your answer probably is “frequently,” so try to comprehend that now.

Things You Should Stop Doing When Your Life Isn't Going as Planned

Accept life as it is when things don't go as planned and work to learn and improve. Keep in mind that what you did isn't as important as what you learned from it and what you'll do with it. Let my friend's example and her calm response inspire you to positively change some aspects of your life and stop doing the following when things don't turn out the way you had planned:

1. Allowing Life's Smallest Setbacks to Bring You Down

The moment you take a deep breath and stop allowing someone else or something else to control your emotions, inner peace will start to come to you. To put it another way, the majority of your long-term happiness or misery depends on how you view your circumstances, not on those circumstances directly. If you are experiencing stress as a result of an outside circumstance, the cause of your suffering is not the circumstance itself but rather how you are choosing to interpret it. Although it is not simple, changing your interpretation is entirely possible with practice.

It all starts with laying a foundation of positive thinking in your daily life and making it a habit, so you need to train your mind to see the good in everything, even when things don't go as planned. Life is a series of thousands of small miracles, so notice them. Notice how lucky you are, as the proof is all around you.

Keep in mind that it typically takes 66 days to form a new habit like this. So, for the next nine weeks, wake up each morning and find the good in your life, and your brain will change to form these positive habits.

2. Believing That Achieving Your Goals Will Be Easy

Be patient, but do not anticipate an easy journey. Patience in life isn't about waiting; it's about being able to keep a positive attitude while putting in a lot of effort to pursue your goals, and good things don't come to those who wait for the "easy" way.

Decades from now, when you are on your deathbed, you won't look back on the easy times, but you'll recall the times when you faced challenges head-on and accomplished your big goals, and you will dream of the strength you found within yourself that allowed you to achieve what once seemed impossible. Do what you can today instead of what is easy, and surprise yourself with your flexibility in overcoming challenges.

Keep in mind that one of the most crucial turning points in any journey is when you finally find the courage to let go of what cannot be changed, because when you are forced to change yourself from the inside out to overcome obstacles you cannot change around you, everything changes.

3. Resisting Your Imperfections

Everyone aspires to be perfect at something, but you have to be aware of when your desire to be perfect prevents you from doing it well. You should also try to understand that perfection is not only difficult to achieve, but it can also be detrimental to your mindset and productivity because it will cause you to remain in the same place and make you feel crazy for the rest of your life.

Take a break and consider the difference between consistent effort and perfection if you feel like you are not progressing, and discover what motivates you so that you can heal. Try to understand what's going through your anxious mind when you don't feel satisfied and why you feel this way. So who are you now in light of this series of thoughts? And who will you be? And what else will you see if you remove it?

Realize when to stop and say it out loud if you must: “I don't want perfection; I'm fine without it.”

4. Getting Over the Right Moment

The way life works is really strange. You really want something, so you work toward getting it; you wait for it; you go through the same cycle again; you feel like it takes a while to get there; and then you get it, and that's it. Then, all you want to do is go back to the time before things changed.

Then, how can you avoid these feelings of loss and confusion? by being more present every step of the way.

Reach your goals and dreams while also enjoying the journey to get there. Accept the step you are taking, even when you feel like you have lost your way, because the road may not always be smooth and not every step needs to be comfortable or perfect.

You are free to receive various small surprises and joys by letting go of what "should" or "could" happen at every step. You may not live the exact life you desire, but you will live a meaningful life. Even though life can be challenging at times, it shouldn't be viewed as a burden or chore. Instead, turn it into a fun adventure and decide to feel positive about your life overall, your potential, and the current step you're taking.

5. Weakening Yourself by Using Weak Language

Confident people choose their words carefully, and you can be one of them. Compare the two aspiring bloggers I recently spoke with and note the differences:

“I'm a blogger; do you love yoga and meditation as much as I do?” one asks. “Great, then let's talk about this; see the new mindfulness guide I just posted on my blog.”

“I'm trying to blog, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right,” the other says. “I regret not starting this sooner.” Which one, in your opinion, gets the most views, comments, and social shares on their blog articles?

Bottom line: If you are trying to create or become something, speak as if you have already succeeded.

6. Expecting Everyone to Be as Nice, Polite, or Caring as You Are

If you assume that everyone will treat you the same way as you always do, you will be disappointed because not everyone has your kind heart, but be kind despite that. Also, keep in mind that being kind to someone you don't like doesn't make you a hypocrite; it just shows that you are emotionally mature enough to manage your feelings. Be kinder than necessary today because what you sow today will bear fruit tomorrow and because no one ever became strong by demeaning another person.

7. Over-Seriousness

Sometimes we try so hard to control every little aspect of our lives, but try to change your attitude, relax, and occasionally follow the path that life leads you on, try something new, be a little braver, and indulge your curiosity.

The greatest joys in life are frequently the unexpected surprises you never intended to happen, which you can experience more of when you do less. Let go of your expectations and replace them with endless fun exploration if you want to excel at anything, whether personally or professionally.

We don't grow old because we stop dreaming and exploring; rather, we grow old because we stop doing so. So keep going.

In Conclusion

After reading what you just did, I have a challenge for you:

Choose one of the aforementioned points and begin consciously working on it. Make it a daily positive ritual in your life and try your best to avoid reverting to your old habits because, when you're trying your hardest, toxic habits and behaviors will always try to creep back in. So, by paying attention to what your heart is telling you, stay focused and positive about what will happen.
