This article will teach you how to recognize some of the key signs of low self-awareness.

What Causes the Lack of Self-Awareness?

Lack of awareness means a lack of accurate knowledge and ideas, which leads to a lack of personal ideas and self-knowledge, so what are the causes of that?

Every person lacks self-awareness at birth, which is the root cause. Unfortunately, most schools do not teach these concepts, despite the fact that everyone would benefit from learning how to be aware of themselves.

Low Self-Awareness

Signs of low self-awareness

Therefore, if nobody ever teaches you how to think about yourself or how to use other tools to increase your self-awareness, you will have to figure it out on your own. To help you, here are 7 signs of low self-awareness:

1. You Act Aggressively or Defensively

Do you display defensive or passive-aggressive behavior when you disagree with someone? These are indications of poor self-awareness. When you want to protect your identity, you frequently act in this way. You have an idealized version of yourself, so when someone threatens it, you get angry.

If you are self-aware, you will not feel the need to respond in this manner because you will be aware of your true nature and the fact that everyone has a unique perspective on the world.

A true understanding of these two concepts frees you from behaving in this way, and you become an open-minded individual who values other people's perspectives. This attitude increases your self-awareness as opposed to feeling threatened.

2. Lack of Self-Understanding

It may seem obvious that if you don't know yourself, you aren't aware of yourself, but there is a big difference between not understanding yourself and being aware that you don't understand yourself. So, ask yourself honestly how much you understand yourself and remember that nothing is wrong if you don't understand yourself.

In fact, the pain you go through today might end up being your greatest strength in the future. For the time being, be curious about yourself and persevere in your search for self-awareness.

3. You Seek Other People's Approval

Do you make decisions based on what's best for you or what other people approve of?

In other words, do you avoid making changes out of concern that they might offend others? If so, this is a sign of poor self-awareness. Consider this: Let's say you don't want to continue working at your current position and would prefer to switch to a profession that pays less, but that is something that other people will not support. In this situation, you'll keep working at a job that you don't like.

You won't be able to live the life you want if you are constantly worried about how other people will perceive you, and this will have an impact on your relationships and your life. However,  suppose your family disagrees with your decisions, what would you do in this situation? Easy to answer:

What is best for you can only be determined by you.

Everyone is trying to make sense of the world around them, and you shouldn't let other people make decisions for you based on their beliefs, values, and views on life. in the end, it is only their views.

Consider their opinions and pay attention to what they have to say, but keep in mind that in the end, only you and no one else will live your life.

4. You Have Trouble Saying “I Don’t Know”

Here's why it's a sign that you lack self-awareness if you find it difficult to acknowledge your ignorance about something:

Awareness is more about knowing what you don't know than knowing what you do know because there is always more to learn, and this is true even for the things you devote your time to, like your career.

You should know that you know almost nothing, just like everyone else, and the sooner you discover what you do know and what you do not know, the better decisions you make and the better your life becomes. Acknowledging this is not a sign of weakness but rather strength because it takes a lot of courage, insight, and honesty to admit that you do not know everything.

5. Your Thoughts and Emotions Define Who You Are

Do your thoughts and emotions define who you are?

For instance, do you believe that you are just nervous if you get angry? Or do you believe that having negative thoughts means you are a negative person?

These signs show a lack of self-awareness, and the main issue with this approach is that it leads to self-fulfilling prophecies, as your beliefs create your experience, then your experience reinforces your beliefs, and so on. So it becomes difficult to escape this negative cycle when you are caught in it.

Realizing that your thoughts and feelings are tools that help you, not things that define you, is the key to finding your way out of that cycle. So learn to control your thoughts instead of letting them control you.

6. You Complain, Blame, and Make Excuses

Consider a scenario in which you and your friend see a man driving an expensive car, and then your friend begins to complain about the man, describing him as mean and questioning how someone like him could have such wealthy parents.

Think about the meaning of this message—does it reveal anything about this man? Most likely not, and maybe this man is really mean and has wealthy parents, but he's probably one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

Complaints and excuses demonstrate a lack of self-awareness, and most of the time, there is an underlying issue that we are either attempting to ignore or that we are unaware of. Either way, a good look at ourselves is a good starting point.

What can you do to change it? Make a mental note whenever you catch yourself blaming, excusing, or complaining, then take some time to reflect on your observations, be aware of them, and identify their origins rather than punishing yourself for them.

7. Constantly Thinking That Everyone Else Is Wrong

Do you believe that most of the time, you are right and everyone else is wrong?

You observe the situation from your perspective as well as that of others, and in most cases, you could be both right and wrong at the same time. If you want to increase your self-awareness, you must be open to hearing other people's perspectives, because if you believe that you are always right, you will not be able to broaden your horizons or become more self-aware.

So say, "Your point is interesting," rather than "You're wrong."

In Conclusion

You are at least somewhat self-aware if you are reading this article, and you are at least aware enough to realize that you are not self-aware. Self-awareness is also a lengthy process that takes time and patience, but with perseverance and will, you can delve deep within yourself until you realize who you are and understand the truth about yourself.
