People tend to believe they're not the best versions of themselves and strive to change because they see themselves differently from how others see them. We call this phenomenon a distorted self-image.

What exactly is a distorted self-image?

It's when you have a skewed self-image. Maybe you think you're shorter than you actually are or your clothes are too tight and need a size up. You might focus on certain details and think they're more visible than they are. This distorted thinking can affect your identity, skills, values, and capabilities.

Signs You're Looking at Yourself through a Distorted Lens

It can be hard to pinpoint when exactly you're viewing yourself through a distorted lens. After all, how you feel is natural, and how you see yourself might seem normal and true to you, but it's not an accurate or realistic reflection of who you are, nor is it in line with your surroundings.

Personal characteristics differ across individuals, but some are common and worth considering because they can help you identify and work on fixing the problem down the road.

1. Criticizing Your Appearance

If you constantly point out your flaws every time you glance in the mirror, chances are you have a distorted self-image. It's normal to find something we don't like about our appearance and want to fix or improve it, but if this becomes your sole concern and you keep telling yourself you're unattractive because of these flaws, you must change how you see yourself.

2. Feeling Ashamed by Your Body or Appearance

A word like shame may trigger powerful emotions within you that you shouldn't let hold you since your feelings of guilt about your appearance or weight fail to reflect reality or healthy thought patterns.

Shame can derive from your thoughts, but it can also come from what others say or do around you that festers in your head.

3. Tying Your Value to Your Appearance

One of the most dangerous things you can do is tie your worth to your appearance since it extends beyond that. Your value comes from your contributions to others, talents, time, and individuality. These things make you stand out from others, whether you're struggling with a physical issue or have a big nose.

4. Obsessing Over Your Weight

Exercise and a healthy diet are excellent for maintaining your health, but focusing excessively on them can cause frustration. If you spend too much time obsessing over what you eat, counting calories, and planning workouts, you risk becoming discouraged and losing sight of the other wonderful things in your life.

How to Fix Your Distorted Self-Image?

It's quite hard to live with this terrible self-image, no matter how much you think you can. You need to change some things in your life and your perspective on yourself. But how do you do that? Use these easy pointers to find out.

1. Take Baby Steps

It takes time to change your self-image, so start small. Don't try to change your view of yourself all at once drastically; that's a surefire way to fail. Instead, set smaller goals you can achieve before moving on to the next.

2. Tune Out Your Inner Critic

You're your harshest critic. The best thing you can do is ignore that little voice pointing out all your flaws. It might be tough at first, but gradually, you can replace negative thoughts with positive ones and overcome them.

3. Appreciate Yourself

The easiest thing you can do to improve your self-image is to remind yourself constantly of what makes you unique and special. Dedicate a few minutes each day to this; it will boost your self-love and turn your negatives into positives.

4. Don't Look for Flaws in Your Good Deeds

Sometimes, it's okay for your work to be good enough. Being on top of your game is great; you shouldn't feel bad about it.

Yet, we often hunt for flaws because we're not perfect at everything we do. Pushing oneself to do better comes naturally to us, especially when we're skilled and talented. We should give it our best effort without going overboard; it's already enough to do that.

5. Avoid Comparing Yourself to Others

Drawing inspiration from others to be the best version of yourself is good, but constantly comparing yourself to them isn't healthy. Others might outdo you in many aspects. They may have longer hair or a slimmer body than you do.

This is the course of life. Once you embrace that instead of wishing you were them, you're one step closer to boosting your self-image.

6. Spend Time with Supportive People

Spend time with those who make you feel comfortable rather than those who stress you out. Negative vibes drain your energy and drag you into a pit of negativity. Spend less time with them and more time with people who empower you, encourage you and help you maintain a positive attitude toward life and gratitude for what you have. This will amp up your happiness and improve your mood.

7. Eat Healthy

As mentioned earlier, if you have a distorted self-image, you're likely to concentrate on what you eat. It shouldn't be the focus of your life, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't be cautious about your food choices.

Choose foods that give you energy, follow a balanced diet as much as possible, drink enough water, eat vegetables and fruits, and don't deprive yourself of sweets. If you want them, go for them; they'll give you energy and a wonderful feeling.

8. Do Something Nice for Someone Else

If you're feeling down or frustrated, remind yourself of the good things you can do. Someone could always use your help, so extend it to them.

Think about ways to return the favor to others, whether it's your coworkers, family, friends, or community members. Go down the road that makes you feel good about yourself and promotes your worth.

To Sum Up

When thoughts about your self-image creep in, remember that you're the one in control. You need to think about what you bring to the world and your place in it, so don't judge yourself for your physical flaws because they can't be changed. Instead, give yourself the attention you deserve; it will improve your outlook and make you feel more comfortable fitting into your surroundings.
