However, as the circumstances of our lives change, we begin to question our identity because we no longer align with the way we used to see ourselves.

This is exactly what happens when one goes through an identity crisis. So, let's talk about what identity is, how to spot an identity crisis, and how to deal with it.

What is identity or who are you really?

By identity, we mean all of the experiences, values, beliefs, relationships, and memories that make up a person's sense of self.

An identity crisis develops when we feel detached from what we previously assumed to be our identity. This is what is taught at university in psychology classes. Education plays an important role in how a person deals with identity issues.

Writing an essay on “Who am I?” is a very common practice for every student to apply their knowledge about the concept of identity and create a vivid picture of themselves in the present moment, where students post free articles on the topic to share their thoughts with others.

Identity Crisis

Signs of an identity crisis

Identity crisis is a developmental process that involves asking a person about their identity. In other words, it is the inability to define one's identity in this world.

People may face an identity crisis after any change to the status quo in their lives.

Below is a list of the most common events that lead to an identity crisis:

  • Marriage or divorce.
  • Loss of a family member.
  • The birth of a child.
  • A change in health status.
  • Moving to another place.
  • Quitting work or finding a job.

How do you discover an identity crisis?

An identity crisis is not an obvious thing; however, the surest way to find out is to ask the person a few questions, and see if they can answer them with confidence:

  • What is your passion?
  • Can you describe yourself?
  • What are your values?
  • What is your role in society?
  • How happy are you in your current job?
  • Are you feeling satisfied at this point in your life?

If you encounter a lot of negativity, notice that your spirits are low, and that the things that once brought you happiness no longer make you happy, consult a professional because this can indicate depression.

Identity Crisis

How do you deal with an identity crisis?

An identity crisis can cause a lot of trouble for a person, where your productivity decreases because you doubt whether you are doing exactly what you want to do, or you are doing what you have to do. You may also lie to others because you fear that they will reject the changes in your life, and you may experience other physical symptoms.

1. Contact a therapist

It won't help to think the same thoughts over and over again. So, you need the intervention of a specialist. Talk to someone you trust and arrange several sessions to see if this specialist can help with your condition.

2. Take therapy

Only if your doctor prescribes it. If your identity crisis is accompanied by depression or other disorders, your doctor will likely prescribe medications, in addition to psychotherapy.

3. Discover your beliefs and interests

Being true to ourselves is a great way to reassure who we are. For example, it's okay if you don't like swimming anymore, as long as you can find something you like.

4. Reconsider your goal

Previous goals may have had nothing to do with you and were just reflections of other people's opinions. So, what is your goal now?

5. Accept the support of others

The people closest to you may find out what you're struggling with. So, don't isolate yourself from them, and talk about what's bothering you because they might come up with ideas worth thinking about.

In conclusion

It is not always easy to answer the question “Who am I?” because this issue is not widely discussed in society and the family. Since we are expected to find out somehow, this may be a long-term inconvenience for some people.

Reading articles and books will teach you some things about the theoretical side of the case, while dealing with it involves some other procedures. So, reconsider your goals, talk honestly to yourself, and stop doing anything you don't like.
