Beliefs form a series of principles, rules, or deeply entrenched ideas in our subconscious, acquired over our upbringing. They're the product of influential figures or our personal experiences etched into our minds.

We carry positive beliefs aiding success and negative ones hindering progress, shaping our behavior and thoughts.

Joseph O'Connor and Andrea Lages, authors of Coaching with NLP, define beliefs as principles of action. Understanding someone's beliefs is best seen through their actions, not their stated beliefs. Our beliefs stem from experiences, yet we often act as if they are undeniable truths. In essence, we are shaped by our actions.

If you observe a successful person, you'll likely notice they hold a set of strong beliefs. Their experiences have led them to believe that nothing or no one, consciously or unconsciously, can stand between them and their goal.

Conversely, some believe success is hard, others are superior; luck dictates success or a stable income offers more security. These beliefs obstruct goal achievement, driven by fear that disrupts growth and obscures genuine opportunities. To break free from these limitations on your growth potential, cultivate a deliberate thinking process.

10 steps to get rid of your negative beliefs

Follow these 10 steps with probing questions, challenging these beliefs and replacing them with empowering convictions.

1. Identify Beliefs That Limit Your Abilities

Explore through self-inquiry: Why do these patterns persist? Why do you believe that things must stay the same? What makes you dwell on this? Examples of limiting beliefs include assuming everyone shares equal abilities, the impossibility of achieving desires, feeling inadequate in public speaking, and many more.

2. Explore The Origins Of These Beliefs

We must understand the origins of our beliefs. Are they rooted in our experiences, planted by influential figures, or absorbed from our environment? This helps us understand why we think in this way.

Overcoming Negative Beliefs

3. Determine The Positive Or Negative Advantages That Our Beliefs Yield

All beliefs hold some positive aspects, yet their validity shifts with time. Consider children learning not to talk to strangers—a wise caution in their early years. However, as they mature, interacting beyond their familiar circles becomes essential. It's vital to discern the initial positive rationale behind our beliefs, noting why they've lost relevance or become negative barriers to our growth and progress.

4. Correcting Beliefs

When our beliefs obstruct our progress, it's crucial to question their validity. Granting ourselves the chance to exchange them for new ones can initiate a more conscious thinking process.

5. Replacing Old Beliefs With New Ones

Once we decide to change our beliefs, it's important to replace them with positive ones. For example, shift from thinking you're not good at public speaking to recognizing you're acquiring the necessary skills. This perspective acknowledges your current lack of skill while emphasizing your growth potential.

6. Improving Your Life By Embracing New Beliefs

Analyzing various scenarios and applying new positive beliefs can significantly enhance your life. Take the previous example: by acquiring new skills, you not only become adept at public speaking but also bolster your character and earn greater respect from others.

7. Considering The Negative Effects Of New Beliefs

We need to assess the potential negative outcomes of applying new beliefs. The goal is to understand the minimal impact on our lives when cultivating new positive beliefs.

8. Imagining The Best Outcomes By Sticking To Old Beliefs

After asking those earlier questions, it's crucial to analyze the best-case scenario of persisting with old beliefs. By considering this, we'll understand that we face similar obstacles inherent in these outdated beliefs.

9. Thinking About The Positive Impact Of New Beliefs

Imagine the best possible scenario in your life upon adopting new positive beliefs. For example, mastering public speaking can boost work performance or elevate your skills as a lecturer. Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.” To change outcomes, embrace new approaches.

10. Developing A Strategy To Cement New Beliefs

We must firmly establish new positive beliefs in our consciousness and align our actions with them. A concise action plan with tasks like adopting new behaviors, shedding old habits, and employing fresh conversational techniques linked to these beliefs is crucial. Changing deep-seated beliefs requires repeated effort and courage, sometimes necessitating a certified coach specialized in Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
