Finding a balance between work and personal life can be extremely difficult in the current fast-paced world. Small business owners who are committed to their company's growth and success may feel that they must complete project-related tasks while also realizing the value of spending time with their families at home and avoiding exhaustion.

Effective Ways to Achieve Work-Life Balance

There are several ways to help achieve this balance. We will mention five of them that have helped me personally stay balanced and comfortable:

1. Identifying the problem

Small business owners usually spend most of their time at work, and the hours go unnoticed. At the beginning of my job, I often went the day without feeling the time until my wife called me after midnight to wonder if I would sleep at the office and if I needed anything. I was not ignoring my family; it was overzealousness and integration into the work in a way that caused me anxiety.

Unfortunately, the hours of busy work pass continuously without your noticing. Although I enjoyed what I was doing, the lack of sleep and the long absence from the house caused me some family disputes, in addition to forgetfulness, lack of concentration, and irritability.

I realized that tasks don't end even if I work all day and week; I won't finish work, so I merely decided to set a fixed time to leave the office every day, but the implementation was not easy. This reduction in working hours helped improve its quality, my psyche improved, and my productivity increased.

I was not surprised; I read many studies that proved that the most productive people at work are the ones who have achieved a balance between professional and personal life, and the same applies to ordinary employees and managers.

2. Setting boundaries

We are highly distracted by our phones and their notifications; I often find myself suddenly stopping the conversation with the other person to check a text message or an email, which makes the other party stop talking.

When I started ignoring my phone, I became more engaged in conversations with others; It was like someone recovering from addiction, and now I feel annoyed if someone interrupts me while talking to answer their phone.

3. Allocating sufficient time for sleep

Creative thinking and the ability to solve problems are two of the most critical advantages of successful entrepreneurs. Rest and sleep have a significant positive impact on brain function, and the lack of sleep affects the way it works and makes it more challenging to make decisions, solve problems, control emotions, adapt to change, and all the other abilities and skills required, in addition to being one of the causes that lead to depression and suicide.

There is no definite information about how long a person needs to sleep every day. It varies from one person to another, and I think three to four hours is not enough time. It must be seven to nine hours.

Severe drowsiness leads to a condition called micro-sleep, which is small naps that occur during wakefulness; a lack of sleep causes dangerous effects on driving, similar to the impact of alcohol or more.

4. Taking breaks

According to many researchers, fun activities and vacations can ease work pressures and renew your energy to return to work energetically and ready to make decisions and face challenges, in addition to having a positive impact on relationships and strengthening family ties.

5. Staying away from electronic devices before bed

According to the National Sleep Foundation, the current working lifestyle, which extends throughout the day, has reduced the relaxation state the brain goes into while preparing for sleep by the evening. The light emitted by electronic devices has a significant impact on our ability to sleep.

The photoreceptors in the retina sense light and darkness and give a signal to the brain about the state of the outside world, whether during the day or at night, and responsible for this in the brain is the suprachiasmatic nucleus under the thalamus.

This signal is responsible for waking up in the morning and feeling sleepy at night; looking at electronic devices at night from computers or mobile phones may be the reason for sleep difficulties.

In conclusion

There is no doubt that the nature of work conditions between the past and the present has changed; it is different from when I started my job 35 years ago, and achieving balance differs from one person to another. The techniques mentioned in this article will help you find what suits you.

I do not know if the term “balance” is the right choice, but I think we need to integrate our careers with our personal lives so that we have enough time away from work to get enough sleep and keep the body and mind healthy and active.
