Note: This article is taken from Erin Falconer's blog, where she presents 4 methods that help us master any skill.
All great talents have one thing in common: they are hard to learn, which makes their masters rare and increases their value and demand in life. All you have to do to master any great skill is to apply the right attitude. These talents can bring you enough wealth and enable you to realize your full potential.
4 basic methods suitable for developing any skill
Here are four fundamental methods for any appropriate situation that you must develop to become a teacher and champion of anything you want:
1. Obsession
Although there are other appropriate terms to use, such as passion or commitment, I chose to use the word obsession because that is how most people will describe their experience. It's imperative to be obsessed.
To become an expert at any skill, you must read everything there is to know about it, connect with others who share your passion and inner drive to practice it daily, and engage in conversation with them. What's going to propel you forward on that journey is obsession.
That's why you should devote all your attention to a passion project, focus on it, read about it, discuss it, dream about it, and turn it into a business. Just do as much of it as you can; at some point, it should become part of your life.
2. Discipline
People view discipline as negative, challenging, or dull, but it isn't. You can easily give yourself the gift of discipline, and discipline is necessary for almost everything positive you will accomplish in life.
On the other hand, discipline is simply prioritizing the task you have to perform and scheduling it consistently, whether or not you enjoy doing it. For instance, I used to work out for 45 minutes on Sunday mornings, and over the previous ten years, I have missed at most ten sessions. If I did miss one, I would usually make up for it the following day.
That is non-negotiable because I've committed to it. I respect my word and consistently achieve great results. To master any skill, you must practice it consistently for a long time, so decide what you want to learn and make the most of your time to master it at all costs.
3. Perseverance
You will encounter many challenges in mastering your skills, including technical and educational difficulties. However, ensure one thing is that when you are determined to do something, you will find a solution to all your problems more quickly. The biggest obstacle you are likely to face is yourself. You'll want to try something different or feel bored and lazy.
You must remember that the difference between a hero and others is that a hero doesn't give up on his goals when challenged or dull; instead, he keeps working toward them. You will eliminate most of your competitors by doing this because almost everyone gives up on their goals because they take a long time to master. Therefore, the only thing you need to do to succeed in your field is never to surrender.
4. Concentration
It is very smooth to become sidetracked, especially when undertaking lengthy tasks like learning a new skill. It takes years to get where you want to go, and most people give up before they even get there because they don't have a clear destination in the first place.
Your ideas and projects must change over time, but you must set a goal and pressure yourself to stick with it. Write down your goals, visualize them clearly, and put them on a sticker for your wall or smartphone. As the American actor Bruce Lee once said, "I am not afraid of the person who trained a thousand kicks at once, but I am afraid of the person who trained one kick a thousand times," you will be glad you did.
In conclusion
Mastering a great skill is not difficult; it's all about repetition, discipline, perseverance, and focus, and anyone can do it.
