Note: This article is based on a piece by author Diana Ritchie, in which she tells us about her experience in eliminating stress.

Fair enough, stress is unavoidable, but even though eating well, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and practicing self-care are effective stress-reduction techniques, there are times when you need to turn to other natural antidotes; otherwise, you run the risk of endangering your mental health and safety. With that in mind, here are 12 natural antidotes for stress.

12 natural antidotes for stress

1. Avoidance, modification, acceptance, and adaptation

"When we feel the effects of stress weighing us down, it's like carrying a backpack that gets heavier over time," the Mayo Clinic staff writes. Beyond commitments, life's journey can become difficult under excessive stress. Even the things we look forward to, like weddings, can cause stress because they are the things we fear.

You need to regain balance if the level of stress is higher than you can tolerate. This is accomplished by lowering your stress levels, improving your coping skills, or both. So, if you want to reduce your stress, try the following:

  • Avoidance: There are ways to prevent stress, such as avoiding peak commute times if traffic aggravates you, or declining additional tasks if your workload is already at capacity.
  • Modification: Another way to reduce stress is to alter your state. Setting boundaries, controlling your energy, and expressing your feelings are some recommendations.
  • Acceptance: Recognize that while you can't change everything, you can improve by using self-talk, learning from your mistakes, and practicing positive self-care.
  • Adapt: Change your standards and expectations, offer some encouragement, rephrase your objectives, and concentrate on the end result without paying attention to the details to adapt.

It only takes a few repetitions of the proper technique before you realize how much easier it is for you to carry the heavy backpack that was weighing you down.

Stress-Relieving Methods

2. Practice visualizing

Although letting go of things and moving on, or even taking a day off and engaging in some activities, can help you put distance between yourself and the sources of stress, this is not always possible because you might not have the time or money. Also, there are still travel restrictions because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Visualizations can help you return to stability at home even if you have a vacation scheduled for a few months from now.

Close your eyes and let your senses take over when you're feeling overwhelmed. For example, if you're at the beach, imagine the sun warming your skin, the sound of the waves, the smell of the ocean, and the sand gliding between your toes. However, don't stay there for too long because you don't want to get sunburned. Instead, imagine it for a few minutes until you're ready to face the present once more.

3. Work on deep breathing

To lessen the body's reaction to stress and regain control, practice the Navy breathing technique. Former Navy SEAL Mark Divine has been using what is also referred to as the "box breathing" technique since 1987, and it functions as follows:

  • Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose as you slowly count to four.
  • Hold your breath and slowly count to four, making sure not to close your mouth or nose while doing so.
  • Breathe out for 4 seconds slowly.
  • Repeat the aforementioned mantra for four minutes, or until you feel calm, at least three

4. Reduce negativity

Are you mired in a downward depression spiral? You are not by yourself. Our thoughts have a significant impact, according to neuroscience research. In other words, the more negative thoughts you have running through your head, the more likely it is that you'll find yourself in a sticky situation. Contrarily, positivity fosters more positivity.

Fortunately, by removing tech toxins from your body, especially social media, you can reduce negativity and reenergize your mind to be more positive. You might also find it beneficial to think positively and express gratitude.

5. Describe the daily schedule

Simply put, it's acceptable to say no occasionally if the demands of your personal and professional lives are significantly stressing you out. So, keep in mind that your priorities are the most crucial. Simply state your priorities clearly and up front.

You might negotiate as well. For instance, if you can't meet a client or friend today on Friday, let them know your schedule, so they can choose a time when you're free to meet.

Stress-Relieving Methods

6. Use the PMR (Progressive Muscle Relaxation) technique

Spasticity brought on by stress and anxiety can be treated using a technique called Progressive Muscle Relaxation. The University of Michigan Health System offers the following advice to get you started:

  • Inhale, then for 4 to 10 seconds, firmly but not painfully tense the first group of muscles.
  • Instead of relaxing the muscle group gradually as you exhale, do so quickly and completely.
  • Before working the following muscle group, take a 10- to 20-second break. Notice the differences between the muscles' tense and relaxed states.
  • Count backwards from five to one after you've worked out every muscle group to bring your attention back to the present.

You'll become more adept at relaxing more quickly and easily with some practice.

7. Become friends with stress

Despite the fact that stress is unpleasant, it can be beneficial if it occurs in moderation. In fact, one study found that the ECG improved when participants perceived stress as beneficial, according to health psychologist Kelly McGonigal, who said in a TED talk that it's "a lot like what happens in moments of joy and courage."

McGonagall advises that we handle stress better rather than completely eliminating it. To achieve this, the doctor advises that we take a more positive approach to stress, such as when you notice a change in your heart rate or other physical symptoms brought on by stress. Tell yourself," This is my body assisting me in meeting this challenge."

8. Loudly giggling

Science has shown that there is some truth to the adage "laughter is the best medicine." What causes laughter to reduce stress?

  • Provoking the body's organs.
  • Relaxed muscles.
  • Boost cardiovascular health.
  • Building up the immune system.
  • Bringing down blood pressure.
  • Weight loss.
  • Creating a useful diversion.
  • Mood elevation.
  • Lowering the stress hormones.
  • Elevated endorphin levels.
  • Building relationships.

All of this sounds positive and helpful, but how can you make your daily life more humorous?

The methods differ, but you can try to get in touch with someone who always makes you laugh. Another tried-and-true method to tickle the Funny Bone is to look at funny pictures or watch funny videos. It's also advised to practice laughter yoga, not take life too seriously, and spend time with your pet.

9. Avoiding the pursuit of perfection

According to author and researcher Brené Brown, "It's crucial to improving your life to understand the difference between a healthy pursuit and perfection. According to research, striving for perfection hinders success and frequently leads to depression, anxiety, addiction, and life paralysis. I always say, "Perfection prevents you from improving and finding new opportunities," and worse, in my opinion, stress and overthinking destroy productivity because they cause you to overthink everything that goes wrong, wish you had done it differently, and overthink again and again, wasting time.

Every aspect of your life can be ruined by trying to be perfect. I used to believe that by dieting, I would become more fit and perform better, but I've discovered that perfectionism isn't worth the physical harm it causes, in addition to the harm it does to your health, your job, and of course, your relationships. Fortunately, you can stop being a perfectionist by following the following advice:

  • Take a moment to unwind and give up.
  • Set realistic goals that you can accomplish.
  • Embrace criticism from others.
  • Never evaluate yourself against others.
  • To push yourself outside of your comfort zone, use hypothesis testing.
  • Give up ruminating.
  • Keep the ideal and the good in balance.
  • Aim to enjoy the process and keep it in mind.

10. Drawing and other artistic endeavors

The next time you're feeling stressed, go ahead and draw, use posters, or experiment with clay, bring out the Van Gogh in you. A Drexel University study found that art can significantly reduce stress-related hormones in your body.Fortunately, skill level doesn't matter.

11. Interact with others

According to Kelly McGonagall, "one of the most underappreciated aspects of the stress response is that stress makes you social." To comprehend this aspect of stress, we must discuss oxytocin, a neurohormone that modifies your social instincts in your brain, encourages you to act in ways that promote close relationships, makes you yearn for physical contact with your loved ones, increases empathy, and increases your willingness to support and help those who are important to you.

Helping your family, friends, neighbors, community, or coworkers can reduce stress because it is a natural anti-inflammatory, helps blood vessels relax during stress, and aids in heart cell regeneration and healing from any damage brought on by stress.

12. Be aware of your emotions

Guy Winch, a psychologist, questions, "Do you apply a bandage to the wound or take antibiotics to treat the infection? There are no questions. In fact, if first aid were not administered when it was required, questions would be raised; why then wouldn't the same be true of our mental health?

When we understand, as that person did - who suffered from ruminating on rejection and agonized over failure - that emotional wounds are just as crippling as physical wounds, we can be expected to heal from psychological wounds. However, we must learn how to take care of our emotions by doing the following:

  • When you become aware of your emotional pain, address it to prevent it from getting worse.
  • When you don't realize it, redirect your intuition's response to prevent it from happening again.
  • Be kind and boost your self-esteem if you've been being cruel to yourself.
  • Positive diversion can break up negative thoughts.
  • Make sense of your loss.
  • Limit excessive guilt and prevent its protracted presence.
  • Learn which therapies are most effective for you.
