About 15 years ago, I had a moment of awareness. I sat in the library on a Saturday morning and read hundreds of pages from my journal.

Note: This article is based on a blog post by Marc Chernoff, in which he tells us about 7 things you should insist on regardless of what people say.

Specifically, I was looking for all the unfulfilled goals that I had written down over the years. It wasn't long before I realized that my entire course of life up to that point had been guided by the opinions and decisions of others, and every day, I did what others assumed I should do, instead of what was right for me.

Personal Experience

When I woke up this morning, I marveled at my life, whereas I used to wake up disturbed by the thought of a new day. Now, I wake up excited about it and satisfied with my life, and I am so happy that I did what I had to do, overcame difficult times and fears, and reorganized my life with activities and values that make me feel alive today.

I tell you this because I know that life can get messy sometimes, and sometimes one is so busy that one forgets how important it is to listen to themselves rather than others, but I am happy to tell you that things can change if you want to, whatever your age.

Just as I changed my condition, I know hundreds of other people who have done the same thing. Throughout my life, I have watched people reinvent themselves; They start families at 48, graduate from college at 57, and launch successful companies at 71.

Things You Must Insist On, No Matter What People Say

It all depends on our insistence on making changes and our commitment to them. You must first remember that our happiness depends on us, and there are some things in life that you must insist on doing them, regardless of what others say about them. For example, you must:

1. Insist on living your life according to your vision

Most of us were not raised with the idea of striving for our purpose in life, and most of us may not even know what it is. As children, we are rarely told that we have a unique place in life. Instead, our elders often teach us that our lives must somehow meet the expectations of others and that we should find our happiness just as they found theirs.

So, instead of them teaching us to try to discover ourselves and who we are, they train us to do everything according to the opinion of others until we can almost live our lives as they want, each day is designed as someone else told us it should be.

After that, one day when we search for our dreams and seek to achieve our goals, we find that most of our dreams did not come true because those around us and we believed that what we wanted was beyond our reach. So, it's time to get rid of these lies and make changes, and it definitely takes courage to gain wisdom and become who you really are. Today is the first opportunity to take a step towards that.

2. Insist on getting rid of what you don't care about in your life

You can give up a lot of things in life without losing any value, and this is called growth. Letting go of the old makes way for the new, and letting go of the inappropriate gives way to what works for you, and when holding on to something hurts more than letting go, it's time to let go and grow. In other words, start getting rid of the habits, routines, and circumstances that hold you back.

You can only discover new things if you gain enough courage to let go of the old and familiar. Be brave, follow your values, and make the changes you want. Dare to be different and enjoy it.

3. Insist on prioritizing your passions

The purpose is the reason for everything you do, and passion is what motivates you to do it, and without it, it's impossible to progress. The human heart begins to beat when it discovers a goal that captures your attention, frees you, challenges you, and gives you a sense of meaning.

Some people resist this fact and think that emotion is just an extra, but this is nonsense. The unhappiest people are those who have no deep passion for anything at all. Know that passion and contentment are closely related, and without them, any happiness you experience will be only temporary because there is no deeper meaning to it to make it last.

So, remember that if you can't do something with all your heart, don't do it. Only passion can lift the soul to great heights. If ever there was an opportune moment to follow your heart and do something that matters to you, that moment is now.

4. Insist on working hard to achieve what you want

Sometimes, you have to achieve what you want from scratch, and you have to work harder than ever to get more than you dreamed of. Dream, work, and determine what is really important to you, and then act accordingly with all your might, as dreams do not automatically turn into reality, but they take the most determination, effort, and hard work.

Remember that difficult circumstances do not last. Rather, strong people are the ones who persist, and most obstacles fade away when we make a decision to walk boldly against their will. If you have a strong commitment to your goals and dreams and rise up every day with great passion for working towards achieving them, then anything is possible. So, dare to live the life you dreamed for yourself, and go ahead and turn your dreams into reality.

5. Insist on saying what you want to say

Dr. Seuss said, "Be yourself, and say what you feel because those who don't like what you say don't matter, and those who really care about you won't object." There is some truth in this phrase.

So, be friendly and reasonable, of course, but don't always speak carefully, drop your fears about what other people might think, say what you have to say, and forget about the possible consequences of doing so, and you will find that most of the time no one will ever feel offended or angry.

If they feel annoyed, it is probably only because you have brought something important to their attention that forces them to think differently. The bottom line is: if you don't speak, a lot of important things will never be said, and in the end, nothing is sadder than keeping the words you didn't have the courage to say.

6. Insist on not worrying about other people's opinions

When I started writing, I used to worry about whether people would think what I was writing was good enough. I desperately hoped that they would like it, and many times, I imagined they didn't like it. One day, I realized how much energy I was wasting worrying about that. So, I gradually learned to stop worrying about not knowing what they thought.

Know that some problems in life, such as not knowing what other people think of you, really have no solution, and people's opinion of you is more about them than it is about you anyway, so they may like or hate you just because you remind them of someone they loved or hated from their past, which is something that has absolutely nothing to do with you. So, remember this is your life, your choices, your mistakes, and your lessons, as long as you don't hurt people, you don't have to worry about what they think of you.

7. Insist on being yourself

It is human nature to try to imitate others we respect, perhaps a parent or a famous personality, especially when we feel low in self-confidence. But trying to be someone else will always make us feel empty inside because what we value in the people we admire is their uniqueness, and to truly become like them, we must develop our own unique personality.

In this way, we will actually become less like them and more like our true selves, as we all have our own unique and slightly strange qualities, and as you become more comfortable with what distinguishes you, you will start to feel comfortable with being yourself.

So, enjoy being different and being unique. If you find yourself feeling very different from your surroundings, look for a new environment, but do not change your identity and remain yourself.
