No one is supremely confident during their first speech on stage, which means that the art of public speaking is not an innate talent but a skill that can be acquired and developed.

Practice and Commit

The art of public speaking can be learned and mastered with practice and perseverance. If you are a CEO who needs to deliver a speech to boost the confidence of your employees, a student doing a presentation for the first time, or a freelancer who needs to boost their brand's popularity, speaking in front of an audience might seem difficult, but it's not. It's just about presenting the information convincingly and making the experience useful for the audience, even if it takes a bit of excitement.

In the beginning, the speaker has a short time that can be used while introducing them to the audience, but how? Watch the audience and try to guess how excited they are.

Well, presenting on a stage always requires a text or some basic content to stick to, but it must not be boring. The trick here is to benefit from the innate power of observation. So, focus on the audience for the first few minutes of being on stage rather than trying to remember the script.

Observe the atmosphere and the types of people in the room, their gender, age ranges, and other similar characteristics. It is useful to improvise a bit and make mental notes when required.

Give the "Attention Span" Due Attention When Starting the Speech

Most studies point to the simple fact that people's attention span is decreasing. Constant notifications and messages on mobile phones distract us all the time, which has changed how we interact with the world. Therefore, the public speaker must be innovative in confronting this phenomenon and overcoming it by using different points of view.

Here are some strategies that can help engage your audience:

  • Telling a personal story at the beginning might add a special touch to your speech. We have loved stories since our childhood, and we are ready to learn through them. So, remember that adding a personal dimension makes the speaker sound honest and logical, thus deserving of attention.
  • Arousing the audience's attention by moving around the room. You can also ask some interesting questions to prove a point more effectively or come up with an interesting fact to excite the audience.
  • Using a sense of humor and telling jokes from time to time to entertain the audience, even when the topic you are talking about is serious.

Using the Ancient Art of Storytelling as a Tool to Attract Attention

We adore stories—at least we did when we were young. Almost every one of us has a grandmother or aunt who was good at storytelling, whether to preach or to make a point in a practical way.

The art of storytelling is deeply ingrained in our psyche and must be used. The basic structure of storytelling can always be the same, which is: Presenting the problem, showing future opportunities if the problem is solved, and finally presenting the solution.

Finding a Common Interest

Do your loved ones always listen to your opinions? How many times have they done what you asked them to do? Did it only happen a few times?

Think about it. If your loved ones don't listen to you most of the time, why would an audience that doesn't know you listen to or pay attention to you?

Every person needs a gain to implement someone's idea. The gain here lies in finding a common interest. In order for the audience to listen to you, they must be interested in the topic you present in the first place. Your role here is to guess what interests them. When you discover that, you can find a common interest between you and your audience. Finding a common interest is the first reason that drives companies and entrepreneurs to start communicating.

In Conclusion

Public speaking is a great way to communicate with a large audience in just a few minutes. Therefore, whether you're using the stage to market your brand or you're a CEO who needs to present themselves as an influencer, embrace your fear of public speaking and handle it like a pro.

Public speaking can be intimidating or electrifying. The speaker has to be prepared to deal with the audience's reactions, at least at first. However, once they get it, they will find a wide range of good opportunities. Only a few people invest in this wonderful art of public speaking.
