So, how do you devote time to yourself, your health, and your needs when you are always busy?

First, determine what you need. We all need sleep, physical movement, and adequate food, so ask yourself what you need and want. Then, determine what you can do in the available time and organize your time. Scheduling your appointments helps you allocate a specific time to take care of yourself in your schedule, organize other basic activities with it, eliminate obstacles, and focus on things that promote positive behaviors. Finally, be clear with others about your time.

Do you feel so busy that you don't have time to think about your needs, let alone do anything about them? You may constantly think about working or worry about not proving yourself or your worth if you're not available 24/7 (especially if you're working remotely).

Perhaps you are busy with child care, elder care, pet care, or other family obligations, or possibly you are engaged in the usual life tasks of paying bills, keeping your home clean, and managing daily chores. So, how do you make time for yourself, your health, and your needs when you are always busy?

  • The first step is to stop, take a deep breath, and realize that the responsibility for the world does not lie with you. Often, people around you can help a lot if you smoothly ask them to do so and distribute responsibilities professionally and personally. Sometimes, you should clear your mind and trust that everything will be okay, even if you don't do some of the tasks on your list to the fullest or don't do them at all.
  • The next step is to permit yourself to take care of yourself now. If you postpone taking care of yourself until work is less, your children return to school, your home is in good condition, or some other circumstances are just right, you may never be able to reach it, but if you stop briefly and take these steps, you can start taking care of yourself, even when you feel that responsibilities at home and work are never-ending.

How do you make time for yourself when you're always busy?

1. Identify what you need

When it comes to health and happiness, different people have different needs. Still, there are some universal truths: We all need the basics of sleep, physical movement, and adequate food, and to succeed, most of us need to spend quality time with other people, time in nature, and to do something that brings us joy.

Take a moment to identify what you need and want, and ask yourself:

  • How many sleep hours are enough for you to be awake all day?
  • What kind of physical movement makes you feel good and pain-free?
  • What food keeps you energized and makes you satisfied?
  • Who are the people you enjoy spending time with?
  • How can you find ways to have fun outside?
  • How can you communicate with yourself?
  • What activities give you happiness (hobby, reading, volunteering, or something else)?

There is no need to feel embarrassed about your requirements; they are your right, and it is also good to have desires, even when your life is complete.

Make Time for Yourself

2. Determine what you can do

At specific points in your life - when work takes up a lot of your time, and you organize your children's education remotely or go through a significant change like moving to a new place - you may not be able to do everything you want to take care of yourself, but you can still do something.

Think about what's reasonable given your current situation. For example, it's impossible to train for a marathon right now. Still, you can take half an hour to run several times a week, or you can't guarantee that you'll sleep through the night, given your children's ages.

Still, you can go to bed an hour early to give yourself some extra time, or you can't see your friends in person as much, but you can call them while you cook dinner or do some errands. Take a look at your schedule, as there may be small periods.

3. Organize your time

If you feel like there's always more you can do, you'll need to make time to take care of yourself, and when you do, you'll give yourself clear permission that this is the most essential and convenient thing to do right now. Scheduling helps you figure out when to take care of yourself with your schedule and how to organize other core activities.

For example, you can set your alarm to remind you when you are sleeping and that it is a priority. You can set aside time in the morning to practice a sport you love and another to spend with your family and friends. You can also set aside time to read during lunch or next to your child before bed. You can take a short nap, meditate during the break, walk with the family after dinner before watching TV, or set aside some nights for eating out to save cooking time and take some time to complete a task or exercise.

Carefully think when you want to make taking care of yourself a priority. Taking care of yourself not only reinvigorates you but can also motivate you to stop wasting time on unsatisfactory activities. It's not tempting to browse social media in the afternoon if you can use those few minutes to do a quick meditation exercise or need to get your work done by 5 p.m. to practice before dinner.

4. Prepare yourself

To achieve this, you decide that self-care time is sacred, and you will continue caring for yourself. That means eliminating obstacles and focusing on things that promote positive behaviors. For example, if you want to exercise more, clean the treadmill and collect your favorite exercise videos, or enroll in gym classes where there is a penalty if you cancel at the last minute, or if you want to eat healthy, prepare the appropriate weekly grocery list to prepare nutritious foods, get rid of unhealthy foods from your kitchen, and leave the option of eating ready-made or snacks for days when you are busy. You can join a challenge that pushes you to take responsibility for your own goals of taking care of yourself and receive support or even prizes when you achieve them.

Make Time for Yourself

Think about the specifics in advance to encourage positive behavior in the present. For example, you can prepare exercise clothes at the end of your bed to save time before going out or install an app on your phone and computer that shuts down the device at a specific time, such as a reminder to get enough sleep. Remember what you're doing and why it's important to you, and when you're tired or feeling unmotivated, you dare to follow through.

5. Being clear with others

Finally, be understanding. If your partner tends to stay up late to watch TV, tell them when you need to watch a show you love, then head to sleep. If your children wake up early and are old enough to play safely on their own for a short time, explain to them that you will exercise, read, or have a cup of coffee on the balcony in the morning, and they can join you if they wish or can play until you finish.

Set similar limits at work. Ask for a time that works best for your sleep schedule or other self-care practices if someone suggests a meeting that can be rescheduled for early morning or late at night. If you always get requests from your manager or clients at the last minute, talk to them about the possibilities available.

Could you be aware of their needs in advance? Can tasks be assigned to you earlier? Can deadlines be negotiated? To have enough time to take care of yourself, you advocate for yourself and your needs to achieve this.
