Women felt upset by the beauty standards imposed on them, in addition to the fact that 9 out of 10 women wanted to make at least one change in their external appearance.

Observations indicate that most women avoid important life activities, such as joining a club or sports team or doing activities with family or friends, due to dissatisfaction with their body shape and the lack of acceptance of appearance and self-image.

Glamor, an American fashion magazine, conducted a similar poll in 2014, and the results showed that 54% of women between the ages of 18 and 40 do not feel satisfied with their physical appearance, and 80% of them reported that simply looking in the mirror makes them feel uncomfortable.

These findings reveal a real problem in our reality, not only because societal standards of beauty harm most individuals but also because we derive a sense of self-worth from our evaluation of our physical appearance.

Self-image concept

The concept of "self-image" expresses the way we see ourselves. Psychologists have previously conducted comprehensive analytical studies on it due to its association with self-esteem problems and mental health in particular. Scientists have encountered difficulties finding commonalities between these self-opinions as personal, biased, and based on personal, environmental, cultural, and situational factors in one's past life.

Unfortunately, a person does not automatically overcome the negative self-image with age, and this is a problem that requires a solution by describing this self-image as an integral part of our personalities; rather, it determines our potential and our identity, as well as the extent to which an individual accepts themselves and, as a result, forms a sense of self-worth.

Changing your self-vision

Changing a destructive self-vision is not impossible, but it requires diligent efforts. Many practices can improve an individual’s relationship with themselves and allow them to achieve personal development and self-satisfaction. Below are some ideas for changing one’s self-vision:

  • Psychologists attribute the distorted self-image to childhood experiences, including excessive criticism and bullying or the irrational expectations of parents, teaching staff, or peers. This leads to distorting, discouraging, and lowering self-esteem instead of improving, enhancing, and motivating it. So, be careful not to allow the past to influence your present or future because it has passed with all its sorrow, and you are ready to move forward with your life.
  • People are overusing the concept of a “positive mindset” in the modern era, and it is essential and indispensable for anyone who seeks to achieve a consistent level of self-love. People should do what they can to refute negative self-labeling because there is no point in destructive criticism and frustration.
We must protect ourselves from the world and reconcile with ourselves, and we should not focus on certain opinions or standards that society imposes on our appearance. The problem is that most individuals work hard to hide the formal defects that contradict these standards, which leads to the formation of a unified crowd that has no place for individualism or diversity in the modern era.
  • To define all aspects of your personality. There is no equal to the human being and the innumerable comprehensive and complex thoughts in their thoughts. Thus, do not underestimate yourself. The human is not a simple entity; rather, they assume several functions, responsibilities, obligations, and roles, such as fathers, husbands, children, and friends. For this reason, we must not devalue ourselves and lower our self-worth because of outward appearance or formal defects in the eyes of prevailing standards. Human existence involves a higher mission, and achievements can prove their abilities.
  • Conducting an assessment of reality. The self-image consists of a combination of 3 factors: A person’s vision of themselves, others’ opinion of them, and their impression of their image in front of others. Others’ views of you may not coincide with your personal view of yourself. For example, a person may consider themselves an anxious person while others see them calm. You can ask about your characteristics, your friends, family, and colleagues so that you can learn about new aspects that you were not aware of before.
  • Most importantly, one should stop comparing oneself to others because comparison distorts one's self-image and many other disadvantages. A person's self-confidence is shaken when they begin to count the blessings in the lives of others and compare them with what they lack and feel dissatisfied as a result.

We often claim to be rational and mature individuals who do not care about the superiority and blessings of others. Yet, we see our value and achievements compared to others to varying degrees.

We all know that this behavior is destructive, yet we apply it. Beware of continuing to compare yourself with others because there is no point or benefit from this behavior.

In conclusion

We want to point out that the real defect lies in the aesthetic standards that society imposes on us and not in us as individuals. We must not derive our value from appearance factors such as “clear skin” or “ideal size.” No one has the right to impose these standards on us and strip us of our beauty.

Our uniqueness is to attract a unified audience in which there is no place for diversity. There is no significant value in society’s standards, and the matter depends on how we see ourselves and our characteristics. We are talking here about the individual’s view of their characteristics and not the appearance of their bodies.
