  • It makes life simpler and easier. Nothing will be difficult for you when you love yourself, and you won't hold yourself responsible for mistakes.

How could someone boost their self-esteem?

In this article, we'll talk about five common self-esteem mistakes and how to fix them by adopting better tactics and routines.

This article should help you become more aware of your self-esteem and provide practical tools to use in your own life.

1. Ignoring the importance of improving your self-esteem

It is very easy to get lost in focusing on the wrong things about yourself, such as failures and flaws. While it is useful to draw lessons from the past, it is unhealthy to view yourself through these negatives constantly.

What do you replace it with?

Start by giving yourself a two-minute break each day this week. Sit in a quiet place, take a deep breath, relax, and then ask yourself: “What are the three things I can value most about myself?” It doesn't have to be extraordinary things. It could be something as simple as being punctual or flossing your teeth this morning.

If you practice this every day for a while, your perception of yourself will start to change, and you'll begin to respond to situations and thoughts that come up during the day in kinder ways.

2. Striving for perfection

Perfect execution of tasks can be a wise choice.  If you do something perfectly, people will praise you, you won't get criticism, and you will be satisfied.

However, perfectionism is a very destructive habit. It can cause you to overthink and prevent you from taking the necessary actions because you will be too concerned about falling below the level of those around you or not be completely satisfied with your performance and actions. As a result, you lose your self-esteem.

What do you replace it with?

Follow your needs and do what is necessary. Usually, when you strive to do something perfectly, you end up failing. So train yourself only to do what is sufficient. Avoid using perfectionism as an excuse to procrastinate; instead, complete the task or project without wasting time preparing it to be perfect.

3. Comparison

Comparing yourself to others and their lives might please you in case you have higher certificates, a better life situation, or a more attractive home. However, there is a permanent dark side to the comparison: you can never win, as there is always someone who is better at something, has more, or has more beautiful things than you.

What do you replace it with?

Start comparing yourself to yourself instead of engaging in this destructive habit. Take note of where you are and what you have accomplished, and concentrate on improving yourself and your results.  You will feel more motivated and confident as a result.

4. Putting pressure on yourself after stumbling and failing

It's normal for us all to stumble, fail, or make mistakes now and then when attempting to do anything of value in life. The way you handle these situations greatly influences your self-esteem and success in everything you want in life.

In situations like this, it's common to blame oneself for failing. Although it may sound comfortable and even useful, this is not the best option. 

What do you replace it with?

When you encounter one of these circumstances, be kind to yourself and ask yourself:

How would your friend or parents support and help you in this situation?

Consider it, then take the necessary action. Talk to yourself the same way you would expect your friend or parents to do so, as this will help you to demolish hopelessness and self-loathing and to be more optimistic after the initial shock of a failed test, a bad date, or a relapse during exercise. These things will all eventually disappear.

5. Spending time with sources or people who drain your energy

People and everything in your life significantly impact your thoughts and actions.  So be careful, and avoid letting negativity, pessimism, and perfectionism from family, friends, online sources, media outlets, or magazines demoralize you.

What do you replace it with?

Consider the people and informational resources you spend the majority of your time with, and consider the following two questions:

  • Who are the three most negative and energy-draining people in your life?
  • Which three information sources seem to impact your mood, thoughts, and self-esteem negatively?

Consider your responses, and then think how you could avoid these individuals and these information sources this week.
