Before we delve further into explaining this old principle, consider this: Are you a thinker or a doer? We'll respond to your response later, so keep it in mind.

Though it is a commonly discussed topic today, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto initially discovered Pareto's Principle in the late eighteenth century. Vilfredo noted that Italian wealth is owned by only 20% of the population, indicating that it is not distributed equally but rather follows an easily predictable pattern. That is the principal's main idea; In life, most things aren't distributed equally.

Pareto's Principle was resurrected in the 1950s by Joseph Moses Juran, one of the twentieth-century management pioneers and widely regarded as a pioneer of the QMS (Quality Management System). He found that this principle can be applied in a variety of business and life contexts.

Essentially, Pareto's Principle shows that most of our results result from straightforward, concentrated efforts. Stated differently, not everything is worth the same, so things shouldn't be treated equally. When we concentrate on a select few tasks, projects, or activities—the so-called "vital few"—we have the greatest impact. If we prioritize our tasks, we will be more productive at work when concentrating on these "few" tasks. This is what demonstrates the importance of understanding this concept.

Common Misconceptions About the Pareto's Principle

We can see more clearly where to concentrate our time and efforts when we apply Pareto's Principle correctly. Ultimately, only a few tasks are given the most concentration. However, there are, unfortunately a lot of common misconceptions regarding this principle. Many so-called "experts" misuse Pareto's Principle to draw attention to their content while applying it incorrectly.

Before going any further, let's keep in mind that productivity, like life in general, does not have a single standard that fits all. Therefore, we must put aside our concerns about what needs to be done and focus on investing in the strategies we will learn about to further our own interests.

Pareto's Principle

1. the 80/20 Rule Must Be Applied Strictly

These ratios draw the most attention due to the name, the 80/20 principle, but Pareto's Principle is not restricted to those values. Instead, consider the numbers 20 and 80 to represent the "inequality" we previously discussed, and consider the fact that their sum of 100 is not just a coincidence.

There may be variations in the ratio of your inputs to outputs. Maybe you are an 80/10, which means that 80% of your results come from 10% of your efforts, or maybe you are a 90/15. The point is not to obsess over 20 and 80. Instead, approach your everyday work with this principle as follows: Simple, focused effort generates most of the results you achieve.

2. To Be Productive, You Have to Ignore the “Trivial Many” and Concentrate Only on the “Vital Few”

If this were accurate, life would be really simpler. However, there would be disastrous results if we focused solely on the "vital few" and ignored the "trivial many" in real life. We cannot completely ignore something just because it doesn't generate immediate results. Even though we would all like to, we can't act as though "trivial many" like bill payment and office work don't exist.

Although we might not enjoy performing these tasks and think they are a waste of time compared to other things, the truth is that we must complete them. Pareto's Principle will be ineffective if one concentrates too much on these tasks. That is precisely the opposite of what we would want to happen—as we would become trapped in a vicious cycle.

Customizing Pareto's Principle for You

Since common misconceptions have been identified, you can start creating your success ratio based on your definition of productivity.

Let's go back to the initial question posed in this article: "Are you a thinker or a doer?" No matter how you responded, now pose the following questions to yourself: What percentage of your thoughts have an effective impact? How many of your decisions have an actual impact on your work? If your time is being spent on unproductive thoughts or hopping from one task to another, how effective are any of these strategies? The key point that we overlook when discussing Pareto’s Principle is that it has no benefit unless we apply it effectively to ourselves.

Pareto's Principle

Prosperous American investor and entrepreneur Warren Buffet is considered an authority on Pareto’s Principle and is reported to have dedicated 80-90 %of his day to learning. This indicates that the well-known investor spends more of his time learning than making investments. You can use this example in your own life, but you might discover that the outcomes are different based on this percentage.

Achieving success does not entail putting yourself in a box whose measurements were intended for someone else or restricting yourself to what success means to someone else. The only definition that matters is the one you define for yourself based on your life now and the life you aspire to in the future.

Don't let adhering to the 80/20 rule cause you to lose focus on your true goals. Instead, consider doing this: Take a moment, consider your own success ratio, set aside considerations of inputs and outputs, and determine a success ratio that accurately reflects your efficacy. Is the ratio of your productivity 80/20? Do you think for 20% of the time and act on your ideas for 80% of the time? Or is it 85/15, or is it 90/10? Or a completely different ratio of all of that?

This is where you have to consider what your top priorities are and how well you've been able to implement and develop them. This is true productivity because effective thinking leads to effective implementation and vice versa.

In conclusion, don't just apply productivity principles because you feel like that's what you should do without giving them some thought. Instead, take a step back and consider the bigger picture to see how to make the most out of the circumstance.
