What is Burnout?
Burnout is an emotional and physical exhaustion that is caused by working in a very demanding, draining, and stressful role for an extended period of time. This role could be anything from just working yourself to death in your workplace to just going through a very tough and stressful phase in your life that is causing you constant and long-term stress.
Let’s get acquainted with some of burnout’s most common signs to look for first:
- Feeling completely exhausted most, if not all, of the time.
- A constant feeling of defeat and helplessness.
- Feeling disconnected from the world.
- Having a very negative attitude towards everything.
- It takes you longer than usual to finish any task.
- Self-doubt and lack of confidence.
If you happen to notice any of the above, you are probably experiencing burnout yourself and therefore have to start dealing with it healthily. Let’s mention a few tips that can help you overcome burnout.
How to Deal with Burnout?
There are plenty of ways out there that will help you overcome burnout over time; these are some of the steps that you can try:
1. Go on Vacation:
The first thing that comes to mind is to go on a vacation. Talk to your boss and let them know what you are experiencing. Explain how critical your situation is, and they will understand. You need to completely cut yourself off from work and get some peace and quiet. This will 100% decrease the stress you are feeling and put your mind at ease. Try to go with your significant other and/or some of your close friends or family members—in short, surround yourself with people you love. This would make the vacation much more effective and speed up the healing process.
2. Find a Way to Blow Off Some Steam:
If you keep locking everything in without taking a release every now and then, things can get ugly pretty quickly. Find yourself a way to relieve the stress. Try physical exercise, for example, going to the gym, going swimming, or jogging in the morning. It can be anything else other than that; you can play video games, listen to some music, or literally do anything else that gives you a breather.
3. Moderate Your Poison:
Each of us has our poison; some people drink, some people smoke, and some others turn to energy drinks and other heavily caffeinated drinks to get them going. That’s fine, but in moderation. It wouldn’t help your situation to fully depend on these things because that’s how most people turn to more serious addictions.
4. Connect with Nature:
As cheesy as it sounds, it works like a charm every time and for everyone. Going on a nice camping trip in the woods, spending a couple of weeks at the beach, or even going for a hike would do you good. The silence and the beautiful sights will soothe you down quicker than you think.
How to Prevent Burnout?
Avoiding the problem is much easier than solving it, so why get yourself into that quagmire in the first place? Let’s learn about some useful ways to stay on track and avoid burnout.
1. Hit the Gym:
You don’t have to be the next Dwayne Johnson; just move your body every day. Keeping a nice physical exercise routine will keep the stress outside of your body and away from you. Going to the gym after a long day at the office is a great way to blow off some steam and keep your mind from overthinking about work. Plus, it has a lot of benefits for your physical well-being as well, so it’s a two-for-one deal.
2. Eat Well:
Some people don’t know this, but some foods actually have natural antidepressants in them, such as omega-3 fatty acids. Try having a varied diet that contains everything your body needs; physical well-being is part of the process.
3. Sleep Well:
You need to give your body enough time to rest so it can restart correctly the next day. Having bad sleeping habits or not getting enough sleep will result in exhaustion and a loss of focus over time. Get yourself the sound sleep that your body requires.
4. Seek Professional Help:
Going to see a therapist or a mental health professional is something that you should do even if you don’t feel like you need it. Keeping your mental health intact is something that requires frequent monitoring and checkups because most of the time we are not even aware of the issues we have, so it’s great to expose yourself to a professional and let them take a closer look and give you their helpful feedback on what they saw and what they think you should do.
Finally:
Your mental well-being matters; give it everything it needs to remain healthy, so look after yourself. Whenever you feel overwhelmed or like you have had enough of whatever you are going through or whatever is going on in your life, there is nothing wrong with pulling the plug on everything and getting some time for yourself. Talk to your friends and family or seek professional help; eat well, sleep well, and be well.
