But who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
Our success is closely related to our degree of excellence and how we manage particular aspects of our lives or values. The following seven arenas can and should guide how each individual, organization, and business operates.
The Values Arena
Everybody—individuals, organizations, and businesses—has values. They may not know or be able to express what they are, but they possess these values. A company's values are what they believe in.
A company's values will affect how business is conducted and how employees behave and work. As a result, understanding these values is crucial. So, consider the following questions: Is what you believe in important? What do you hope to achieve? What do you believe in when you start your work? Is there a clear sign in your workplace or home that you work in the Values Arena? Can you confidently say "I" or "we"?
The Responsibility Arena
What responsibilities should we fulfill?
1. To be high-integrity individuals and companies
Ultimately, we only succeed because we are honorable, which entails being truthful, diligent, and unambiguous. Money is meaningless if the person amassing it is dishonest.
2. To prioritize our families
Sometimes, I reflect on all the people I support and strive to help daily and realize that none of them will be there for me when I pass away. However, my wife and kids will always be there for me during these trying times, so I give them everything.
3. To donate to charities
Donating money, time, and possessions is one of the things that make us successful and healthy people. Rather than writing a $10 check every now and then, save it up to give up a certain amount each month and let it be a generous amount. At first, you may think this is impossible, but you will get used to it, and when your time ends, you will be able to look back and see the difference you made yourself.
The Possibilities Arena
People often become so engrossed in the daily grind that they lose their enthusiasm for life. They may work hard and complete significant tasks, but they still need to dream and consider the possibilities.
How are things going at work in the Possibilities Arena? "What are the chances of this business being a resounding success?" is a question you could ask at your next team meeting, whether you have 30 employees or just you and your partner. You may be shocked by what you might hear.
People are full of amazing ideas, dreams, and potential. They only need someone to pause and pose the question in a supportive environment.
The Negotiation Arena
Every possibility has its cost. At this point, the company doesn't just say, "We can," but also engages in internal negotiations regarding potential compromises, such as:
- If this happens, what is the expected cost? And is it worth it?
- If this happens, how might this affect other aspects of my work? What other changes are necessary, and are they worthwhile?
- What benefit should I get from looking into this possibility?
- How long will it take me to reach this possibility? And in light of that, do I want to re-adjust the organization to fit that timeframe?
Take some time to assess the costs of your possibilities. Then, once you find what suits you, start the project.
The Vision Arena
Which of these possibilities would you like to try? Concepts that give us a sense of distinction become easily "viewable" and can even become "our vision."
For something to happen, you must view it happening long before it actually does.
What would you want to try if time and money did not matter and you were certain that your attempt would succeed? So why not give it a shot? This is your vision, and it is a powerful motivator for achievement and success.
Dreaming and vision inspire us to try things outside our comfort zone and lead to great things.
It is better to challenge great things and win glorious victories with the possibility of failure rather than to be ranked with those poor souls who neither enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.
The Dedication Arena
Perseverance is the most important aspect of work. What sets successful people apart from others is determination. Successful people aren't always the most intelligent, attractive, or highly educated; instead, they are the ones who say to themselves, "I can do this!" and "I won't let obstacles stop me." These people are always at the forefront because they have entered the dedication arena and are continuously active there.
Dedication is the key to success, so what’s the next step? Hard work! Learn how much work it will take to realize your dreams, and then give yourself time to prepare for the obstacles.
Here are some questions to help you through the process and prepare yourself for the next work and success:
- What challenges will we face?
- How will we overcome these challenges?
- When it comes time to confront challenges and physically demanding battles, what attitudes and levels of dedication will we need to exhibit?
- What rewards will our dedication bring us as individuals and organizations?
Concentrating on these questions will prepare you better for the times when you will need to demonstrate dedication, perseverance, and inner steadfastness. Mental preparation now will make you more successful in the future.
The Achievement Arena
Achievement is realized when the task is complete, and only a few factors are important at this point:
1. A little rest
After pursuing your dreams, your body and mind need some well-earned rest. It's not time to sit back forever, but after all of your hard work thus far, a little rest may be in order.
2. A small celebration
Celebrations are great for us. What’s the point of all this work if one can’t enjoy their labor's fruits? It might be a quiet evening out, a lavish party attended by one hundred of your closest friends and business associates, or a trip to a strange location.
3. The feeling of accomplishment
The greatest reward is, as the old saying goes: “the satisfaction of a job well done." Not many people make it to the Accomplishment Arena very often. So, enjoy the satisfaction!
4. A new higher goal
Pushing yourself to reach new heights is one of life's greatest experiences. You've completed your task, which is fantastic, but now what?
