Mental Conditioning: How Most People Stumble Over Their Limiting Beliefs
Did you know that your life is greatly affected by what you believe in and that your thoughts shape your life? If you think you are destined to succeed, you are right, and if you believe that you are a person who is good for nothing and will not achieve anything in your life, you are also right.
“Whether you think you can or cannot, you are right,” says American businessman Henry Ford. You do not have to believe everything people tell you. If your teacher or parents tell you you are poor at math, are you really? Well, most people will believe that.
However, if you think about it, why would your parents or your teacher say that in the first place? Is it because you failed the test? Or because you are not doing well in this subject at school? Does that mean you're not good at it?
When you believe something, regardless of whether it is true or false, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and you make it real. When you think the economy is poor, you will never want to invest more money in advertising, and as a result, your sales are affected, and your belief that the economy is poor is confirmed. So, our beliefs in life are shaped by mental conditioning.
The story of Barracuda
One of the scientists experimented on the barracuda, placing it in a large aquarium to swim freely. After a while, he put a glass panel in the middle of the tank to divide the aquarium in half, so the barracuda was trapped on one side, and on the other side, the scientist put some small fish. At first, the barracuda saw the small fish and tried to swim to the other side to eat them, but it failed because of the glass panel, so it tried repeatedly but in vain and eventually gave up.
After some time, the scientist removed the glass panel. All the fish were able to swim freely and pass by each other. There was nothing to prevent the ferocious barracuda from swimming freely. Surprisingly, it did not try to chase small fish to eat them. It was convinced that no matter how it tried, it would not be able to penetrate the glass panel that was there. Are you behaving like a barracuda?

The Elephant Story
Have you ever wondered how circuses train elephants? Elephants are the largest and most powerful animals on Earth, as they can smash trees and drop them to the ground.
This story is similar to the story of the barracuda fish. When the elephant is small, its legs are bound by chains, and because it is weak and small, it will not be able to break the chain that restricts its legs no matter how much it tries to free itself. It remains this way for several days until the young elephant is gradually convinced that it will never be able to free itself from this chain. Even after it grows up and increases in size, it still has that limiting belief that it will not be able to break the chain and free itself, although if it tried, it could break it easily.
Are you behaving like this elephant?
The story of Les Brown
Perhaps humans are unable to feel compassion for animals, even when we behave in similar ways to elephants and barracudas.
Motivational speaker Les Brown was an active boy when he was young, but he had a short attention span; that is, he couldn't focus much on his studies and homework. As a result, he did not do well in school, so his teachers described him as educationally disturbed, and as with the barracuda and the elephant, the young man thought he could not do well in school.
Fortunately, Les met one day with his teacher and mentor, Mr. Washington, who changed his life. Les told Washington that he was educationally disturbed and that he could not do what was asked of him. Mr. Washington looked at him and said, "Don't let someone's opinion of you become your reality."
These words changed Les's life forever, and he began to think with ambition and wanted to build a successful life.
Due to his lack of success in school and the belief that he would never amount to anything, many suggested that Les work in the post office or the sanitary department when he was job hunting after leaving school. These individuals advised Les to seek a physical labor position; some even urged him to enlist in the military.
Fortunately, Les worked with dedication, commitment, and perseverance to achieve his dream of becoming a DJ, eventually using his talent and passion for speaking to become one of today's most renowned motivational speakers, inspiring thousands of people globally.
Imagine what would have happened if young Les had believed what others told him about working at the post office or the sanitary department.
We can sometimes be negatively influenced by what other people say, and we can also experience this when we voice our opinions to other people.

Are you getting stuck because of your limiting mental conditioning?
You can think whatever you want, and you can also believe that you are clever, handsome, wonderful, talented, a good writer, and diligent, and that you are a person who never gives up on their dream and is destined to succeed.
On the other hand, you can believe that you are not good at writing, cannot speak English because it is not your mother tongue, are weak in mathematics and in running a business, that the economy is not good now, and that the circumstances are challenging. Whatever you choose, it will become reality.
Why do you think Steve Jobs spent millions developing Apple products? That is because he was confident in the quality of his products and knew that people needed them. If he had not trusted his products, he probably wouldn't have spent millions of dollars building and growing Apple. The same applies to investing in the stock market or real estate, where most people buy real estate because they think the market is in good shape or find it suitable to invest in. Do you think they will purchase the property if they don't think it's worth investing in? Of course not, so you should understand that your beliefs are true for you only.
One company once sent two employees to India to study the market and sell shoes. One employee returned and reported that it was not feasible because people in India did not wear shoes. A few days later, the other employee returned with good news.
He reported the existence of a massive market that no one has yet exploited because most people in India do not wear shoes. Does it make sense now? The same incident but with different beliefs and mindsets. When you think it is challenging to start a business or that selling products will face fierce competition, think again; there will be someone else who thinks otherwise.
If you want to be successful, you must adopt beliefs that enable you to reach your goals and achieve your dreams. Choosing limiting beliefs will slow your progress and prevent you from achieving what you want in life.
Skepticism about everything
If you want to be successful, you must adopt beliefs that enable you to reach your goals and achieve your dreams. Choosing limiting beliefs will slow your progress and prevent you from achieving what you want in life.
Here are some great questions to get you started:
- What keeps me from moving forward and achieving my dreams? What prevents me from progressing further and taking it to the next level? Am I too scared? Did I fear failure? Am I not good enough? Is money a problem that prevents me?
- Why do I have this limiting belief? And what makes me think that way? Has anyone ever told me that? Has anything ever happened before? Why am I afraid of progress? And why did I think I wasn't good enough?
- How have these limiting beliefs kept me from progressing so far? What decisions and actions have I abandoned because of them?
- What will happen if I continue to hold these limiting beliefs? What impact does it have on my life financially, morally, in my relationships, professional life, and personal life?
- What if these beliefs are incorrect and I can change them? What if I could become the person I wanted to be, achieving all my goals and dreams? And what makes me more successful than I thought possible?
Try to question everything; these are just a few questions you can use to challenge your limiting beliefs.
In conclusion
Beliefs constrain people; what you believe in defines who you are, so choose to believe in something that gives you power and allows you to move forward.
