How to Boost Your Self-Confidence? Part I

In today's world, "self-confidence" has become a buzzword frequently mentioned in personal development circles, but what does it indeed mean? How can we develop self-confidence? What significance does it have?

This section explains self-confidence and how it can help you in life. Then, we'll discuss seven strategies for overcoming fears, past mistakes, traumas, or negative emotions so you can move forward with your life and regain your self-confidence.

What Is Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence?

1. Self-Esteem

Self-esteem means having a healthy relationship with yourself, having faith in your inner intuition, and experiencing constant calmness and tranquility as opposed to anxiety. People with self-esteem are emotionally intelligent, feel secure in their choices, and maintain good relationships. They generally care for themselves, are content with who they are, and believe they can overcome any challenges. They are fearless in their core values in life.

2. Self-Confidence

Self-confidence means feeling confident about your decisions, abilities, and potential. You have strong, positive attitudes about yourself and your abilities, and you don't care about what others think of you because you know who you are and how you want to live, which is in line with your core values. Being confident means recognising your worth and significance, accepting yourself, highlighting your strengths, acknowledging your flaws, and realizing that you are not a perfect person.

Self-esteem and Self-confidence Importance

Although self-esteem and self-confidence share many similarities, they also differ from one another. Self-esteem is your relationship with yourself, whereas self-confidence is your attitude toward yourself.

Both self-esteem and self-confidence benefit you in your life in several important ways, helping you achieve success in your professional and personal life for the following reasons:

  1. You make wise decisions.
  2. You leverage your strengths.
  3. You feel less anxious and filled with peace.
  4. Your healthy self-image attracts others.
  5. Your communication and relationships are healthier.
  6. You feel prepared

Therefore, it is important to develop these two distinct skills.

Reasons for Lack of Self-Confidence

Since you might not know how confident you are, the following list of indicators could point to a lack of confidence:

  1. You hesitate in your decisions.
  2. You trust others' opinions more than your own.
  3. You do not tell the truth.
  4. You believe that everyone is better than you.
  5. You break your commitments and don't honor the promises you make to yourself or to others.
  6. You seek others' approval.
  7. You choose to concur with others' opinions rather than voice your own.
  8. You focus on your weaknesses and failures instead of your strengths and achievements.
  9. You constantly feel the need to be in charge of everything.
  10. You downplay your own needs.
  11. You have harsh and negative self-talk—the voice in your head telling you what to think.
  12. You feel anxious and stressed, overthinking everything.
  13. You do not feel valuable.

For many people, self-doubt often starts in childhood. Even if your childhood was happy, you might have compared yourself to others or feared failing in some way, which can cause problems with confidence and self-esteem later in life. Speak with a therapist or professional counselor if you feel that your self-confidence is currently being impacted by a significant trauma that you have experienced in your life.

Building Self-Confidence Strategies

You may have realized that your self-confidence is low, but everyone experiences this occasionally. You can cultivate self-compassion and trust yourself if you want to improve yourself. Here are some practical strategies to achieve that:

1. Don’t Be Afraid to Show Vulnerability

Practicing vulnerability can help you feel more self-confident. However, this is not always a comfortable feeling, as it means being open and honest with others and with yourself about who you are and how you feel.

Being vulnerable might mean facing uncomfortable feelings, but being truthful in all facets of your life is crucial for developing self-confidence. Practice expressing your feelings and needs openly, as this is the starting point for developing your self-confidence.

2. Set and Maintain Boundaries

Boost your self-confidence by setting personal boundaries —rules that you feel comfortable applying in your life. Here are some examples of boundaries in relationships, the workplace, and personal life:

  • I can help you after I finish my urgent task.
  • I am not available on weekends.
  • This does not align with my life goals, and I prefer not to work on it.

However, more than setting boundaries is needed, you also need to maintain them. It is normal to feel uncomfortable in this situation, and learning how to set boundaries may take some practice. Clearly define your boundaries and remember their purpose is to enhance your self-worth and mental well-being.

3. Identify Your Core Life Values

Decide which life values are important to you and try to live by them. Values are the ideas or beliefs that shape your behavior; examples include kindness, generosity, giving, and compassion.

Consider the traits of the people you love and what you find admirable in them to determine your core values. Write down the traits you wish to adopt. Additionally, you can look up examples of values online and select the ones that resonate with you. Then, try to categorize these values into groups, find what connects them, and select about six values that you want to build your life upon from now on.

4. Replace Negative Self-Talk with Positive One

Many people struggle with negative self-talk, which refers to self-defeating thoughts, such as "I am not good at anything" or "Everyone is angry with me." These thoughts are not true at all, but they affect your mental health.

Focus on positive self-talk to solve this problem. Therefore, carefully evaluate all your thoughts and determine whether they are true. Then, replace them with kind and positive ones. For example, replace the statement "I am not good at anything" with "I am struggling to meet my goals on time, but I am improving at it, and I excel at fulfilling the requirements of completing the project." Follow this rule: Never say anything hurtful to yourself if you don't say it to your closest friend.

5. Listen to Your Intuition

Intuition is your instinctive feeling about the best decision. Researchers believe this is because the brain evaluates our environment, history, and self to make snap decisions. Therefore, trust your intuition even if you hesitate for fear of making the wrong choice. Often, your intuition is correct. Also, you can improve your intuition by observing what is happening around you and learning to listen to yourself.

6. Identify and Meet Your Needs

While it's acceptable to spend time meeting others' needs, you also need to take care of your own. Consistently fulfilling your own needs will increase your self-confidence.

We have different types of needs, including physical, emotional, and spiritual. Therefore, identify your needs by paying attention to your body. Start with simple needs like hunger or tiredness, and then address them by having a snack or napping.

With practice, you will also be able to identify different needs, such as the feeling that you are not achieving as much as you want and need to accomplish something to push you forward.

7. Redefine Personal Success

Everyone defines success differently, and everyone's circumstances are different, so attempting to meet someone else's or society's expectations of success is likely to fail. Additionally, "failing" to meet an arbitrary standard can undermine one's self-confidence.

As a result, consider your life goals when you redefine success. Some people may want to become wealthy and buy a luxurious home; if these are your goals, that's perfectly fine—start working towards them. However, personal success may also mean starting a family, volunteering for charity, or pursuing a new career. Therefore, don't limit your attention to materialism and money; instead, consider setting additional goals such as leaving a positive impact or a lasting legacy behind.
