How Do You Get Rid of Binge-watching?

Are you a binge-watcher, and the pandemic has intensified this tendency? Don't worry, you're not alone in doing this.

Americans spend 8 hours watching streaming content each day during lockdowns. While there is no doubt that live streaming services are fun, don't let them turn into something essential in your life. Watching videos for several hours a day reduces your productivity.

But what if you are having trouble getting rid of this habit? The solution is to schedule another activity to do on your calendar.

Beat binge-watching TV by managing your time

Excessive viewing of shows is a symptom of poor time management, and to overcome it, you must do the following:

1. Implement the reward system

A reward system can help you manage binge-watching and stick to other beneficial things. So, start completing your tasks for the day, and set aside time after each task during which you can watch the shows after completing them. When you have enough time to watch your program, you will have completed a large part of the tasks.

2. Try timeboxing

It's very easy to watch your favorite show when you have an hour to spare, but to make time for your other responsibilities before it's time to watch TV, try timeboxing. Timeboxing isn't difficult to implement. Just divide your day into 30-minute chunks, assign a specific task to each time slot, just focus on the task you have to do at the moment until the time runs out, and then move on.

Electronic calendars are ideal time management tools. You can make time to do everything you need to do during the day. Also, you may allocate the last period of time to relax and watch an episode of your favorite show. Use this method to enjoy watching a TV show, but without spending more time.

3. Organize a party to watch your favorite show

Do you have a new show that you can't stop watching? Throw a binge party to share with friends. They won't want to watch this show alone, which makes you keep wanting to watch until the next meeting. In any case, it is fun to watch shows with your friends.

Plan these events into your online calendar, coordinate schedules, share the events you create with invitees, and then all you have to do is look forward to watching the next episode.

4. Plan to do more activities

An idle mind, they say, is the root of all vices. So, when there aren't any to-dos on your schedule, it's easy to justify binge-watching. To get around this, fill your calendar with the tasks you want to get done, but do your best to complete them.

The busier you are, the less time you have to watch any content. So, invest in your time to develop your talents, explore your hobbies, or simply get some fresh air.

5. Find ways to practice multitasking

Instead of replacing watching content with activities, you can also try to combine them. The nature of some of your daily tasks may allow you to watch content while you work. That way, you still get things done while enjoying your favorite show.

When you're planning your day's to-do with your electronic calendar, look for opportunities to multitask. Who said you can't enjoy watching your favorite show while doing other tasks like washing, cooking, and even exercising? If you find a combination of multitasking that you love, use your electronic calendar to record it as a daily habit.

6. Schedule a day when you don't watch TV

Every now and then, take a full day off from watching TV. Giving your brain a chance to reset helps you prevent this habit. Moreover, you'll enjoy each episode more when you're not watching the show on a daily basis.

Mark in your electronic calendar the day off when you won't watch TV, and fill that day with anything you want to do that doesn't involve watching TV shows and movies. For a real challenge, make this day dedicated to completely cutting out social media as well.

7. Establish a nighttime routine

We watch most of the content at night after we finish school or work. If you spend too much time, you may find that it hinders your activities the next day, but the solution is to establish a healthy night routine.

It's easy to set up your evening routine in your electronic calendar. So, create a routine that helps you relax and enables you to continue to get enough rest the next day. You can also set aside some time to watch TV, but you may have to skip an episode or two.

8. Control using electronic devices

The amount of time you spend using smart devices is likely to rival the number of hours you spend watching TV excessively. If you allow yourself to spend six hours a day using your smartphone, it will be much easier to justify sitting for three hours in front of the TV.

To actually control the situation, you must control the use of electronic devices, and you should know that replacing watching TV with another addiction, such as playing video games does not represent a great improvement.

Fight your tech addiction on all fronts. Create a morning routine to stop yourself from using your phone when you wake up, schedule time to check emails so you're not distracted by notifications throughout the day, and set reminders to help you complete the task at hand.

No one expects you to stop watching TV completely. In fact, having a little time for entertainment is healthy, but what is not healthy is watching TV shows in an excessive way that controls you, so use your calendar to control that.
