The Typewriter Is a Long Tale: How Has It Evolved and Changed Over Time?
Over time, several typewriters or letter percussion machines were invented. Since ancient times, human realized that writing is a means to unlocking the locks of ignorance and backwardness and spreading awareness and knowledge among all the peoples of the earth.
And here we are now in the digital era where electronic writing has become an alternative solution that is the broadest, most comprehensive and most modern, so you see everyone taps on letters drawn on the magical flat square touch screen.
What Is a Typewriter?
A typewriter is defined as a mechanical or electromechanical device that is manually operated rather than mechanically intended to extract and elicit letters that are printed on paper. Just like on keyboards, we also find keys on the typewriter, but it produces and forms letters printed on white paper by pressing and clicking the letters of the typewriter, we have several types, shapes, and styles of typewriter, including: the electric typewriter, and the mechanical typewriter.
The first introduction and definition of the typewriter to the world was in 1874 AD, as it was the first invention made by the human hand in the field of writing and crafts. And from that day the typewriter became famous, known and sought after, and its popularity increased in the eighties of the nineteenth century. Soon after, the use of typewriters become common in offices, correspondence, publishing houses, post offices, schools and workplaces in almost all countries of the world.

The History of the Typewriter Invention and Its Development Through the Ages
The first time that history, mankind and the entire world witnessed the manufacture and invention of the first typewriter, was by the hands of the great English inventor "Henry Mill" in 1714 AD, its inventor obtained a patent in honor of his achievement, and in appreciation of his outstanding genius and his great effort in illuminating the paths of mankind and serving them and enriching the scientific library with this great invention.
The typewriter designed by the great "Henry Mill" in 1714 AD is the first mother, the first seed, the first nucleus, and the first womb from which hundreds of typewriters of various types, styles and shapes were born, starting from that primitive machine, passing through the electrical, mechanical, commercial and traditional typewriters until the modern electronic typewriter in our time which is the era of digital, technical, technological, informational and purely scientific development.
Returning to the typewriter that was invented by the great "Henry Mill". Because of the many defects that were found in this machine, it could not prove its worth and its practical, actual, and true efficiency as it should be at that time and era. But this did not deny that the story of the typewriter invention by this genius designer had a human and scientific sanctity for all the peoples of the world, this is because it was the cause of the birth of millions of typewriters, a means that revolutionized the scientific revolution, and a method that facilitated the writing and printing process for mankind and service them in letters.
The first practical typewriter known and transmitted to the world is of American origin, as it was invented by an American named "William Burt" which took place in the year 1830 AD. This typewriter, of American origin, was distinguished by the fact that it immediately and automatically printed one letter after another.
Unfortunately, this famous typewriter was destroyed as a result of an American fire in 1836 AD. However, in cooperation with the competent authorities and other people, the American inventor was able to restore his burned machine and add some required modifications to it so that it can return to working automatically, correctly and properly. Note that this typewriter is currently preserved as one of the most important and famous scientific artifacts in the Science Museum in London.
After that, years and days pass to witness a new transformation in human life in the era of typewriters, as in the year 1874 AD. Two genius inventors from America also named "Christopher Schulz" and "Carlos Glidden" invented the first model of typewriters that worked with high accuracy and sound quality, this great innovation met with unparalleled success in typewriters that preceded that era.

The Evolution of The Typewriter Through Time
The invention of the typewriter is one of the most important achievements in the nineteenth century by the great and genius Christopher Sholes, who himself invented this great masterpiece and presented it to people in 1867 AD, but the media was late in presenting, promoting and marketing it to the people, as it was actually shown in the year 1874 AD.
One decade after its invention, the first typewriter began to be used officially in offices, and then after people used the typewriter and entered it into the details of their daily lives, its popularity increased and there was an urgent need and necessity to use it on a permanent and almost daily basis.
How Does a Typewriter Work?
Writing on a typewriter can be considered one of the simplest and easiest types of writing compared to handwriting - the use of the hand, fingers, and a regular pen or quill, as was written in the past - and the method of writing on a typewriter is summarized by hitting upwards.
In other words, when we hit, click, press, or push a key that carries a letter, this key will simply hit the so-called writing bar in turn, which is one of the parts of the typewriter, and the hitting is towards the top, specifically towards the cylinder, which is also one of the parts of the typewriter, on which the writing bar rests and is fixed on within the inking tape, the task of the inking tape is that it takes over the task of printing that letter on the paper and with every tap, hit, click, or press, the cart moves in a left-sided direction and is driven by something called a spring, which is an essential part of a typewriter.
The process continues like this until we reach the last letter and the last word to end the line, then the lever then works to return the cart and bring it back to the beginning with each new line.

How Did the Electronic Typewriter Develop?
In 1981 AD, the global company Xerox introduced a new type of typewriter unique to its kind, the most advanced, sophisticated and innovative. It was characterized by the presence of specialized processors that blended into the components and parts of a contemporary and modern typewriter.
It also contained a memory called random access memory, in addition to an external storage memory and an LCD screen characterized by the presence of a single line. In addition, the electronic typewriter contained advanced features such as the presence of a spell checker and a proofreader.
What Is the Importance of Typing?
Typing occupies an important and distinctive position today, due to technology; and the reason for this is that typing is the best and most important way or method to spread science and knowledge in terms of news, stories, tales, information, novels, human, political, social, religious and economic issues concerned with human and their problems. The typewriter is nothing but an effective and fast means to supplement the typing process and serve it and employ it in the right place and the right way.
It is worth admitting that at one time the typewriter flourished, glowed and gained great popularity and spread, and this led to the recovery, prosperity and enrichment of the typing process, until it became necessary to have at least one typewriter in every library of the world, this is because it has become a necessity and an urgent need that cannot be dispensed with or ignored.
What Is Meant by a Commercial Typewriter?
It happened in the year 1865 AD that the inventor called "Rasmus Hans" invented the design and invention of the first commercially available typewriter, this type of typewriter was distinguished from its predecessors in that it had the ability to arrange, organize and coordinate letters and make them harmonious, compatible, consistent and rhythmic with each other, and this made writing fast, and saved great effort and time.
In his commercial machine, the great inventor "Rasmus Hans" resorted to attaching or connecting white paper to a cylinder that rotates constantly at the bottom of the front of the writing, but with all that, it had the unique advantage of being the first typewriter designed and invented commercially or under a commercial name.
Despite this luxurious feature, this strange machine did not achieve the required popularity or spread among the people as was expected, drawn and planned with great care. The reason for all of this is that there is a defect in the parts of the machine and the way it works, and the matter was attributed to this because its design was not practical, efficient or accurate. In the year 1873 AD, the first commercially successful machine with distinction happened to be designed and invented by the four great inventors:
- Christopher Latham Sholes.
- Frank Haven Hall.
- Carlos Glidden.
- Samuel W. Soule.
In Conclusion
The typewriter, of all kinds, sizes and shapes, has played a major role in the development of the writing process and in facilitating typing and publishing.
If it were not for the inimitable minds of the scholars and their relentless efforts as well as their sincere faith and sincerity to their work and their constant search and pursuit of their passion and determination to reach, as well as their sculpting of rock and their absolute belief that the attempt must lead to a satisfactory result, the course of life and history would not have changed and made us move towards the better.
