The Importance of Writing a Diary

Many doctors promote the positive aspects of journaling. When you are working towards a personal goal, promoting emotional well-being, or looking for a creative outlet, journaling can be an excellent coping mechanism. This is because journaling is a very simple and effective coping mechanism, yet it is largely underused.

We all have endless thoughts, and sometimes these thoughts can be very stressful. Without a healthy way to get rid of negative thoughts and feelings, our mental health can be negatively affected. Also, although journaling may not eliminate negative thoughts, it allows you to free up some mental space, track symptoms, understand triggers, and see patterns in your relationships and viewpoints and more.

Journaling also allows us to highlight what makes us feel good, so we can identify and make more of the coping strategies we find helpful.

How should you approach diary writing?

Journaling allows you to learn about yourself and think about your feelings at different moments in your life. To experience the benefits of journaling, it is essential to be honest and transparent with yourself, and to be precise and detailed in your writing.

Here are some ideas for focus in your writing that you can use if you are interested in journaling as an experience, finding comfort, and making connections:

  • What happened or what was said exactly?
  • When did it happen?
  • If it's been so long, why did you decide to deal with it or express it now?
  • Can you name all the parties involved, and what exactly each of them, including you, did?
  • What was your initial response when this happened?
  • What feelings did you show when this happened?
  • What exactly were your thoughts at that time?
  • Is it repeated? If so, what was different this time?
  • What lessons can be learned from this experience?
  • How do you feel at this very moment?
  • How do you feel about your current life?
  • Do you consider yourself a psychologically and mentally healthy person? If so, why? If not, why also?
  • Are you satisfied with yourself or do you feel constant pressure to change yourself?

Rephrase these questions as needed if you just want to process your day, a specific feeling, or a current situation. There is no right or wrong way to write a journal, so focus on what works best for you.

By writing down your thoughts on paper, you may feel that you have more controllable situations, and you can be provided with more understanding in difficult situations. Journaling can help you reduce and address negative thoughts that arise in certain situations.
