9 Effective Techniques to Combat Workplace Laziness

Even when we are fully aware of how important it is to get things done, laziness can slyly creep up on us at work.

Note: This article, which is taken from author Marc Chernoff, describes the methods he used to overcome his tendency to become lazy at work.

We try to fight it, but there are times when it feels like an uphill battle that we can't seem to win. It is a by-product of those alluring things that pass through our surroundings just to catch our attention. After all, our subconscious minds naturally gravitate toward laziness.

Success is still attainable despite this, and laziness can be defeated with the aid of a few techniques. you simply need to use them to trick your mind before it succumbs to the game of laziness.

9 Techniques to Overcome Laziness

1. Recognizing the Serious Consequences of Being Lazy

If you tend to be lazy at work, likely, you won't complete all of your tasks, which means that you aren't doing your job. As a result, you don't deserve to be paid.

Your managers will eventually take notice of this and fire the ineffective employees. Even if these individuals choose to become self-employed, ensure that they won't do so for a long time.

2. Keeping Your Eye on the Prize

The advice to "break down your work into smaller tasks" is one we frequently hear. Breaking down a big project or task into several smaller ones is a smart way to increase your short-term motivation and focus.

However, you should never lose sight of the ultimate objective as it is the only reason you started working in the first place. At some point, you might seek a promotion or want to score a significant deal that will allow you to be more successful with others who share your objectives.

These are the short-term objectives that eventually motivate leadership and pave the way for larger objectives. If you compare your performance to that of your peers, you should always be aware that a little bit of laziness now on a few minor tasks can turn into a long period of missed opportunities in the future.

3. Finishing Tasks and Not Taking Breaks from Work

If you take a break, laziness sets in and it gets harder for you to get back to work. Therefore, the answer is to finish a task before moving on to the next related one, as your mind can move easily between related tasks because your efforts in previously completed tasks have already directed your mind to the type of work required in all subsequent tasks.

I consider that a related task is any task of a similar type that requires similar mental thinking. However, your confidence will grow and your productivity will increase the faster you progress.

4. Working for You As Well

I frequently observe effective and hardworking individuals completing tasks solely on behalf of another, typically the boss. However, they become lazy and work less when the workload is too light or the day goes by quickly, instead of focusing on achieving something for themselves.

You will never grow your own business if you put all of your efforts into expanding someone else's business and spend all of your free time being lazy. Spending your free time working for yourself will help you avoid being lazy. In all aspects of your professional life, you will be more motivated the more you accomplish for yourself.

5. Create Physical Barriers Against Distractions

Distractions, which are sadly common, frequently result in laziness. If you're anything like me, you probably enjoy reading the news and checking your favorite blogs 50 times a day. Therefore, I set up a physical barrier against distractions by going offline while I work to resist this urge.

However, if you work from home, you probably spend most of your "work" time watching television or movies. To combat this urge, ask a friend to hide the TV remote from you, as you may sometimes need to put up physical barriers to keep out distractions that try to take control of your conscious will while you're at work.

6. Setting a Time for Laziness

One of the best anti-laziness techniques I've used entails scheduling a specific time each afternoon at 4 pm for laziness. Because I now know that I have a specific time to check my favorite blogs and news websites, I gradually stopped feeling the urge to do so during my work time.

It may seem strange or even ineffective, but this has actually increased my productivity from the morning until the middle of the afternoon. Therefore, even though I like to relax in the afternoons, I work diligently and attentively during the first part of the day when my mind is fresh.

7. Perform Self-Training Aloud

This is another weird - literally weird- but highly effective method of self-motivation. Break down the task you're working on into a few smaller, logical steps, then you can self-train aloud by saying things like, “You have to do this, this step is very easy, and I will complete this task now.” Additionally, whenever you complete a step, tell yourself, "That was great work, I'm so excited, I'll finish this soon," to express your satisfaction.

I've discovered that speaking out loud while self-training helps me be more aware of my progress, which motivates me to work even harder on the following tiny step.

Achieving success is merely a game of small steps, and each one is enormous, because eventually you'll be able to gather all of those steps, and once you do, you'll arrive at your destination and achieve your goal.

8. Give Yourself Some Mental and Physical Breaks As a Reward

Every serious hour of work should be followed by a brief, productive break, but only if you use that time to do something that motivates both your mind and body. You may become lethargic and exhausted in the middle of the day from inactive activities.

Therefore, try taking a walk around the office or getting up and talking to someone you enjoy conversing with, or you could try listening to music that inspires and motivates you. Just keep moving and paying attention in any case.

9. Feed Your Body and Mind Each Day

Your food is a sign of how healthy you are, as you will experience fatigue if you consume unhealthy food, which leads to bad work results. Therefore, don't undervalue yourself or deny yourself the chance to reach your full potential. Instead, try to nourish your body and mind with high-quality, nutritious food and get eight hours of sleep every night.
